Magnum workshops & lecture series in Oslo, Norway, March 4th-8th
Dear all,
I’m very happy to announce the inaugural event of Magnum Education, taking place in Oslo, Norway March 4th-8th. This will be quite an event – seven Magnum photographers will each hold a limited enrollment, five-day shooting workshop. In conjunction, there will be a nightly lecture series at Litteraturhuset, a major arts and culture center in downtown Oslo, plus other evening networking events and portfolio review sessions. All seven workshop leaders will show and discuss their own work, and will be joined by several other Magnum photographers and other special guests from within the industry. The workshop will culminate in a large-scale group exhibition to be shown alongside the evening programs, and a Magnum in Motion production featured on the Magnum website.
Workshop leaders in Oslo are: Paolo Pellegrin, Alex Majoli, Jonas Bendiksen, David Alan Harvey, Chris Anderson, Alessandra Sanguinetti, and Alex Webb.
We are looking for professional and dedicated amateur photographers who are interested in pushing their personal photographic boundaries. Please link below for more information.

This looks like a great event, Jonas. I wish I could make it myself. What is the average temperature in Oslo for March 4th? 28 degrees Fahrenheit?
Seems like the gods are congregating at Vahalla- well if you have ever been to the Hardanger Fjord you’d know what I mean!
Wish I could go- always fancied myself dressed in furs, a helmet and plaits!
I am certain anyone that does go (lucky buggers) will get much more than just a new outfit though- wow, what a line up!
ok, I couldn’t resist, I have applied, hope to see you there to!!!
Damn it. The one time something exciting happens at home, I’ll be on the other side of the planet. :/
darn… too bad I move to new zealand early february then, or I’d be there…
Hello All,
We are already receiving great responses! A note about flights…from the states, NWA is having a fare sale now that includes Oslo and can get you here pretty cheaply…but it is best to get it via their website for some reason. As far as inter-europe: Sterling air, Norwegian air, and of course Ryanair, all fly to Oslo for next to nothing…hope to see some lightstalkers here in March!
Best, Laara

shucks…too bad i am in another corner of the planet..!!!
Oslo seems like an expensive place to be.. how much is a room in that suggested hotel? and how many participants are going to be assigned to each of the phtographers?
WOW, ! :))))))))))))))...what a great workshop…and what a cool place to convene (better, the frozen tundra to inspire the whiskey-chat after a days shoot) :)))...
excited for y’all! :)))...Please let us know when the pics from the participants will be put up on Magnum-in-Motion :))>..i think it’s brilliant that Magnum now showcases the work of participants: that’s real 2.0 thinking :))...DAH influence? :))...
thanks jonas/laara: wish we could visit y’all :))
all the best to participants!

About rooms: we have blocked some rooms here: http://www.cochspensjonat.no/we have rooms for singles, as well as double, triples and a couple of quadruples if people want to share it can be quite cheap…many of the rooms have kitchens so students can save on food. Let me know if you have any other questions…glad to help. xLaara

We wish you could come Lance! you would be a great addition :) xLaara
Hi Laara, sent you an email, best, Miguel
damn, have fun you guys. as an inaugural event, am I to understand this will happen again?
Oh dear sorry guys I just heard about the journalist in Kabul, my sympathies to his family and friends.
Hello all,
Thanks for all your enthusiasm around the workshop! We’re all really looking forward to it, I think it will be tremendous energy here that week! (And don’t worry about cold or darkness – that will have passed by then…)
Just wanted to post that quite a few people have not been able to get through the registration process in the last day or so – the server had some space issues – but the bug is now fixed! So if you’ve tried registering unsuccesfully, try again now, it should be ok!
All the best, and look forward to seeing those of you making the trip!
Jonas
And Lisa – yes a dark day for journalism here in Oslo – terrible events. His newspaper ran a full black cover this morning.
hello all!
as jonas mentioned, we are so so pleased with the enthusiastic response to the workshop. as we are receiving many applications, one thing is becoming pretty apparent to me, though: a lack of female applicants! so come on girls, show your stuff!!! we want to see it…
best, laara

Hello all,
Another note on the Oslo event. As i mentioned before, the workshops are part of a wider festival event, with nightly lectures/slideshows/presentations. This is part of celebrations of the Norwegian Press Photographer’s Association 75th anniversary, and the evening events are open to the public as well (workshop participants get a festival pass).
All the 7 workshop-leading photographers will give presentations at the evening festival, but we’ve also just confirmed that 4 more of the Magnum family will show their work too: Jacob Aue Sobol, our fresh and talented young Danish photographer, Richard Kalvar, who recently published the remarkable “Earthlings” book, and Chien-Chi Chang, whose reputation precedes him. Also, our own Bjarke Myrthu, who runs Magnum-in-Motion and has written a very interesting book on photography and multimedia, will show and tell about photojournalism in the internet age.
Lots to be excited about I think, and looking forward to March,
Jonas

Jacob’s work ROCKS! :))...his Sabine book killed me when i saw it here 2 years ago…(or was it now 3)...and, that boy and his wook (for me, he understands, now, Japan in ways d’agata hadn’t ;) )...to me, has always been a comfort: that brothers and sisters still exist, even when we feel alone :))...
that’s a frickin’ show u all have assembled…i cant believe it…
screw Perpignan, Oslo in March looks like the place to be in 2008…wish i were there….

okay full moon wish. want to attend but cannot afford it. anyone interested in sponsoring? grants? empty pocketbook, full heart.
Read the blog this morning. Looks like a fabulous event. Always wanted to meet Alex Webb.
Okay, I just broke down and applied. Any word on how full the event is yet/if there’s any room still open?
Hi there Jonathan – Good, and we hope to patch you back together! The idea is that we’ll review all applicants that apply before the deadline of January 30th in one batch – so if you apply now, you’ll still be in the first batch (and most likely last batch since there has been very good response). Good luck and hope to see you in Oslo! Jonas
It’s interesting to me that certain Workshop Leaders are already “Sold Out” (Alex Majoli, Jonas Bendiksen, Alessandra Sanguinetti and with Pellegrin having people wait listed.)
What does that mean? Does that mean that certain folk have already been accepted?
Yeah yeah, I really need to calm down. I think we should all learn patience from my bad example…
Has anyone actually got a confirmation that they have been accepted into the workshop? Im getting a little nervous.. ;)
Hi Sigurd, Jonathan, et al…
No one has been notified of acceptance yet…We will be sending out notices early next week. We began wait-listing workshops when they reached a certain number of qualified applicants from which we will be making the final decisions. We will stop accepting applications for any and all of the workshops on tuesday, January 30th. Thank you to all of you who have applied…the turn out has been incredible! All Best, Laara
Oh, how I wish that I could be there! You two have done a fantastic job, you have always known how to throw the best shindigs!
Good luck to all those that have applied, it promises to be a very special week indeed. And despite the cold, Oslo is such a warm and exciting place!
Just got my acceptance!!!
Me too! I’m really looking forward to this.
Me and one girlfriend of mine Marta, haven’t yet… hope that they send also negative notice. May be it’s better for my poor bank account… and RyanAir go there only from April the 1st! I’ve found cheap flight if you leave from Italy (Rome, Milan and Pisa) ... http://www.norwegian.no/http://www.sterling.dk/it/flight
... anything else?

Wish I could! It would save me some cash. As a condition of my coming I had to (got to) agree to let my wife come so she could get some travel/vacation time in. Good hit to the wallet!
Of the people that are coming, who have you been assigned to? David Allen Harvey here. Just curious as to if anyone knows already that they will be working with the shooters who are “sold out,” and not “waitlisted.”
Also, will we be picking our own stories or collaborating on a few. I’m sure it will all be covered in the info to come. Just a little too excited!
I got accepted for the Alex Webb workshop :) If you need a couch to sleep on in Oslo, let me know..
I got accepted to Chris Anderson, is the offer in the couch still up Sigurd? :) best, Miguel
I haven’t been accepted and also a friend, Marta. Wait list for Chris Anderson. Just curious of how many girl will be there. But.. my wallet is celebrating right now! Waiting for your report. All the best. Laura
Hi everybody,
late reply (but first post in LS, a bit strange to me). I got in Anderson’s class… see you all in Oslo,
Tommaso
Hi, I was accepted to ‘Alex Webbs’ workshop but have to pull out because raising the funds in time for the 4th Feb deadline is impossible, this is why some people are getting late replies i guess? Good luck to whoever takes my place
In the end I can’t make it, either. I got wait listed as well, but either way it’s just to steep a price for me. Maybe if I hadn’t gone Canon two months ago;-)
Have fun though and bring lots of batteries. They go fast in that cold!
Overjoyed to say that I’ve been accepted. Anyone else from the UK going??
hi there! i finally couldn´t afford to sleep in the recommended hotel… i booked a room in PERMINALEM HOTEL, anyone of you is going to be there? bye!
Hi there all, my roommate had a problem with visas, I have a standard double room booked from the 3 to 9 at the official hotel, anyone wants to share? best all, Miguel
hey miguel , please PM me the price for the week, i’m interested in..
Julien, pm sent, best, Miguel
also looking for the roommate. I have not booked anything yet, I can join you or we can book a room together. Any girls attending, by the way? The question was raised several days before, but there were no replies.
just to say that I’m no longer looking for a roommate, see you all there, best, Miguel
Anyone else out there looking to split costs? I got priced out of a spot in the official hotel and haven’t been too impressed by the costs or location of other hostels. Any Oslo locals willing to rent their couch to a young american photog for a week? Or anyone else going to the workshop want to rent me some of the floor space in their hotel room?
Hi Matt et al,
A pretty funky budget alternative is a ship docked right by the new opera house in Oslo, called MS Innvik. It’s both a hostel and a theater, and has a cafe etc. It’s a pretty funky set-up, and you could walk to the workshop venue in 10 minutes or so.
Here is the web address, for those interested:
www.msinnvik.no
All best,
Jonas

Hi Jonas Bendiksen I am trying to reach you and Magnum responsible from weeks ago. I would liked filming the workshop of Magnum Photographers in Oslo in HDV and offer to the TV channels. As well made a DVD as Educational multimedia for all photographers and not photographers that cant pay the workshop or don’t had the opportunity to be included in the list. I would liked hear something about my educational proposal. I am not trying to made business with this filming. More details please write me: delmialvarez@yahoo.com
Thank you and I wish the best time for all the participants in the Oslo workshop. delmi alvarez
