Mark II N shooters

Hey folks,

I am about to jump to the EOS world and I need an expert’s advice on the MARK II N. I’ve already read some reviews of the new camera and I am aware of its technical profile and (little) differences to the older MARK II. That said, I would apreciate opinions about the in-field behavior of the camera (those ones we cannot find in any editorial review) and also an usage comparison to the older MARK II. Does the difference really worth the extra 500 bucks in its price?

Thanks in advance,

anderson

In my humble opinion, it’s marginal.  I have found the larger lcd screen to be useful, especially when checking for sharpness and noise in low light photography.  The battery life seems to be longer than the regular Mk II, and there are some useful options on the revised menu system which I find are useful but not essential (like writing RAW’s to one memory card and JPG’s to the other).  Day-to-day usage is pretty much identical to the regular Mk II.  Unless you really need the latest and greatest, I would be inclined to stick with the slightly older model.  The only other consideration is resale value when it comes time to upgrade (again).  The N will fetch a bit more on eBay than the regular II, when Canon brings out the Mk III….

Thanks Mike!

Did you notice any difference in the quality of the image, specially when shooting in low light and/or high ISO settings? I am not sure if such difference in fact exists, once the Digic II processor seems to be the same one…

And you are right about the revenue price when going to MK III.

cheers,

Hi Mike.

I see that the 1d mark 2n (thats a mouthfull) has preset modes .Such as "neutral" "landscape" "faithfull" and "monochrome"..

do you find yourself using these modes?..

I use a 1ds Mark 2..whats the difference between the two apart from the special modes option?..

its all becoming abit confusing.

Anderson – yes, now that you mention it, low light noise is less obvious, even when shooting blacks at 1600.  I wouldn’t recommend it but if push comes to shove, the N definitely seems to offer better results that then the II.

Graeme – I have not used the presets.  Canon is has something called Picture Style technology, 6 presets that simplify in-camera control over image optimization and processing (another mouthful!)  I have experimented with it but have not really had an opportunity to use it.

1DS Mark II – biggest differences are full frame sensor, size of image, and different frame rate (per second – slower).  I replaced my medium format gear with a 1DS Mark II as the image size is sufficient for most clients normally demanding a 6×4.5 negative.

Hope this helps.
