About

Marni Horwitz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1979. She studied photography at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont and at the School for Film and Photography in Prague, Czech Republic where she lived for over two years. Horwitz’s work focuses on her personal life, whether the images are of a small town in the Czech Republic or of her family located in Brooklyn, New York. In her photographic series “Desire Despair: Pictures from the Czech Republic” her images reveal a duality in Czech daily life, rooted simultaneously in the beauty of its ancient traditions and the contemporary residue of the Soviet regime. Her images express the romantic and spiritual love she has for the Czech Republic as well as the isolation she experiences within it. In Horwitz’s series Kin, she explores her father’s inner world through a series of evocative portraits, revealing his obsession with music, his connection to his house, and his deep connection with the photographer, his daughter. Horwitz states in her introduction to the work that “….many of my portraits [of my father ] are self-portraits.” Though the images Horwitz creates are based on her personal life, they go beyond what is just personal to her to what is also emblematic of all people deeply connecting and disconnecting with their family, loved ones, and the land they live in.

Marni Horwitz exhibited “Desire Despair: Pictures from the Czech Republic” as a solo show in Febraury 2006 at A.I.R. Gallery (www.airnyc.org) in New York City and has been in several group shows in New York City and in Prague,Czech Republic.
