I am planning a trip soon to photograph Maria Lionza in Venezuela as part of a documentary project on religious pilgrimages. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a fixer in the area of Sorte.

Also, if anyone has any experience working there, please share anything you can think of.

Some people have told me that it’s necessary to obtain a permit from the government to photograph in the national monument where ceremonies take place. I’ve also heard that it might only be possible to get this permit two weeks in advance, in person, in Venezuela. Others say that there is no permit required by the government, but that curanderos will demand money.

I have also been warned by several people that the area is very dangerous, with stories about violent robberies taking place.

I would be grateful for any information, which has been difficult to find.
