medium format scanner
I am looking for a good medium format scanner, I probably can’t afford an Imacon but have been looking at the Nikon 9000 or Minolta Dimage Scan Multi PRO. has anyone had expeience with these or another suggestions? I’m shooting mainly colour neg. Cheers

i scanned all my mf stuff on a minolta multi pro and rate it very highly. i subsequently had a handful of pics also scanned on an imacon and there was no appreciable improvement. if anything the dmax on the minolta is slightly higher. with 35mm the edges go a bit soft and the imacon is def better, but mf is no problem.
at least not for velvia. colour neg is another story but i assume the minolta does as well as anything else. you know they’re discontinued…

the 9000 is great and i use it all the time. Really solidly built machines that will last for ages so 2nd hand would probably be fine. The digital ICE software is great where as the Imacon scans I have to spend ages spotting them. Hope that helps

Go for the Digital Ice. It is worth it. I have a friend that loves his Nikon and I have heard som good things about the Minolta. The digital Ice is a beauty but you will have to be careful in using that on negs. It can stirr things up so I would check that out. I had a problem with negs and digital Ice on my Nikon coolscan. But if it works it saves so much work.

The EPSON perfection 4990 stylus photo is a good machine and at an affordable price…

Anybody ever came across Epson Perfection V750 PRO? I’ve read some good reviews. Looks like good quality for very good price if you need to scan medium format or panoramic 35mm (Xpan) films.

personally i’m a bit sceptical of Digital ICE and ended up switching it off. yes it saves a lot of time re dust and scratches but you also lose sharpness and some fine detail. in some cases it does some weird crinkly things to high-contrast edges. perhaps the nikon is configured differently, but my impression was that the ICE was running too aggressively on the minolta.
for max throughput of hundreds of images – yes. for a handful of top-drawer pics, i’d rather have the extra IQ.

Nikon 9000. Great for Med Format…AND you can scan 35 MM slides and negs as well. Upgraded to this from Nikon 4000 ED (when I added Med Format to my shooting). Do all the dust spot knocking by “hand” with the healing tool in Photoshop. Only used ICE with my dad’s old Kodachromes in batch processing.
