Member Directory broken?

Morning! Just tried looking around in the member directory, but when I select any region in the “current location” or “homebase” pulldowns, the page reloads but shows me the entire wiorld, just as it did on the first load. I just can’t get to show me only Americans, Europeans or Asians.

If relevant, I’m on Firefox 1.5.0.6 in Win XP.

Someone asked about attracting editors to LS. Right now, the member directory is not a very useful resource.

It would be a good thing to ask current users what are they wishes about LS in order, like :

  • more features (which ones)
  • faster website (what pages are slow)
  • current features fixed

etc

Still broken… I can’t search by current location whatever the browser I try. Mac pr PC,nothing. Current loc.popup menu just shows major continents but doesn’t show subsequent countries. It’s a poty… :-(

I think the member directory was somewhat ailing from the start. I never could get it to work smoothly, though it did work. Now it doesnt. I am sure Shinji has this on his list of to-do’s but it is probably a real headache. It is a good feature, at least in concept, so I would like to see it up and working. someone over the summer found me for a job by using it, and I have had cause to use it several times in order to find people in a specific region. I am guessing but we seem to have two basic issues confronting us: speed, which is a function of the server; and features, which is a function of the coding. The former problem seems to have been resolved for the moment. The new server, while it still does get overloaded at times, is performing better and on my end at least I notice that LS loads pretty quickly now. But the latter problem is a matter of mastering this new code and I guess that is not so easy. Plus, there is a long list of things to do, and we cannot expect it all to be solved at once. Fabien is right though, it might help to know which of the features are a real priority for members. I think Shinji has a fairly clear idea—he got the profiles working and the galleries next, text wrapping has been a problem he is working on now, but maybe there are things he hasnt thought of yet.

I’d like to advocate for a working member directory. Very useful tool for me, as a matter of fact I was relying on it just now to locate photographers in some locations and what a dissapointment to find out it’s not working…I’d rather not turn to posting a message like photographer needed here and there as I know how those posts end up by flooding your mailbox for another year or so.

I’m more keen on a working Calendar subscription – the sync to iCal works on none of my Macs, I just get a blank layer….A feature that all of us would find very useful I would have thought…....

I am with Bruno on this one. I think it is more important that editors should be able to find us, because LS is designed in part to facilitate that kind of communication. The calendar would be nice, but it is not necessary as there are other means of getting that information. It is just a convenience, whereas the ability to search for members in a given region is more than that, much more. Our profiles are pretty much in order, the loading is faster and surer, and i cannot think of any new features that would be more advantageous than this one. Perhaps a stronger search engine, as that too seems to work in a cursory fashion, but the member directory and the ability to find members is tops in my book.

Guys. I spot the bug within the code. I’m fixing it right now and it should be published online as soon as Shinji will have used it. Then the location thing within the member directory should work.

Jon: What is the problem with text wrapping?

Steve: I just tried the iCal subscription with http://www.lightstalkers.org/feeds/ics as the url, it works fine. Maybe do you use the previous URL http://www.lightstalkers.org/LS.ics which doesn’t work anymore?

Ok, will give it a try….I tried a number of weeks back, just by clicking the subscribe link, which did kick start iCal and make a new Calendar listing, just that there were no entries showing….......ok, must dash, there’s a Coup here you know !!!

Looks like the directory now works as I expected it to. Well done with the bug squashing!
