About

Mike Brown is currently a staff photographer with the Memphis Commercial Appeal; a 200,000-circulation news daily based in Memphis, TN. Brown is a self-taught photographer that began his career working in account management in the advertising industry. Serving as a team leader for multiple Fortune 500 companies in the financial, industrial and hospitality industries while working for a small agency, He knew it was time for a career change.

Brown required a profession that fulfilled him creatively, spiritually and morally so he shifted his focus to the camera and dove head first into the world of freelance photojournalism. Since then he has seen his work published on the front pages of the New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, The Denver Post, The Memphis Commercial Appeal and inside a myriad of other daily papers in the US and Europe. He has also done contract work for Newsweek, Stern and Entrepreneur magazines. In 2006 Brown won the Multiple Image/Photo Essay category of Editor and Publisher Magazine’s Photos of the Year contest for his work at Guantanamo Bay published by the Commercial Appeal while still a freelancer.

He continues to freelance regularly for the European Pressphoto Agency, Getty Images and EFE News Services and is available for assignments in the Memphis region.
