monitors & display

the time has come to buy a monitor as editing pics on my 12inch is doing my head in.
Money as always is an issue, wishing i could afford the apple 20inch cinema display…

What are people using out there? Any suggested brands/displays?

Hello Jake, I had 2 20inch apple cinema, to me these are just crap. both had irregular back illumination. I gave them back. white was never white, even after calibrating them, there was always a very light rosa shine over the white…now I am back to Eizo (S2111W), amazing quality.

There have been a few posts about this, maybe give the search function a whirl. James Brickwood posted about this some time ago and a lot of replies are on that thread… from memory those Apple Cinema displays are made with LG LCD modules, so buying a good LG monitor gives the same LCD module at a fraction of the price. Can’t remember where I read that, though, so some research is prob in order…

Eizo CG is the way to go if you can afford one … which i can’t.
I opted instead for the NEC Spectraview 2090, about half the price of the Eizo 211, and i’m very happy with it. Wont be buying another monitor for a long time to come.

Apple displays are actually not that spectacular. If you need a good monitor at a reasonable price try and get a 19” Viewsonic VP930. It’s color and contrast are quite good and it can be had for only about $300USD.

I thought about buying the cinema display as well, but realised paying just the double amount of money can get you a 20 inch I-mac. Think about it! I have a 12 inch powerbook and have decided to go ahead and buy the 24inch :-)

Why don’t you just get an old Sony trinitron, Mitsubishi Diamondtron, IIyama, 17”, 19” or 22” CRT monitor. There are still plenty out there at really low prices. I bought my 17” IIyama 2 years ago on Ebay for € 40 and the quality is amazing. Had to go and pick the damn thing up myself and it nearly broke my back lugging the thing in the metro and up six floors of stairs! I believe the prices are even lower now.
