Food Crisis: How Rising Prices Are Stoking Emergencies from Haiti to Somalia

New York, NY

Join Christiane Amanpour, Chief International Correspondent at CNN, as she leads a discussion with humanitarian experts about the impact of the rising cost of food on people living on the margins and amid armed conflicts around the world. Dr. Bruce Cogill, IASC Global Nutrition Cluster Coordinator; Nicolas de Torrenté, Executive Director of Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF); and Dr. Susan Shepherd, nutritional expert and medical advisor to MSF’s Campaign for Access to Essential Medicines, will debate the repercussions of the food crisis.

Riots in Bangladesh, Haiti, Ivory Coast, and other countries have been the most violent and visible manifestations of food’s rising cost. Yet it is millions of people living in the shadows—families already struggling to feed their young children in global malnutrition hotspots—and those caught up in wars—displaced persons in Somalia or Sudan—who face the gravest danger.

How is the rising price of food exacerbating the predicament of those already living on the brink? Who is most affected and why? How are humanitarian aid organizations and governments responding? And what effective nutritional strategies can be deployed to meet the needs of the invisible victims of this crisis?

Please note that seating is limited and will done on a first-come, first-served basis.

The program is free, open to the public, and wheelchair accessible.
