NCTJ Course
|
I want to become a photo-journalist and have been seeing a few of the adds in the UK asking for NCTJ (National Council for the Training of Journalists) certificates. Advise need here!!
Do I need this course which a 1 year full time course or is there another way that I can get into photo-journalism. Any constructive advise would be much appreciated.

thats the course in sheffield right?
i know two snappers that shoot for afp, one took the course, one didn’t. the one that did has a staff job and takes good photos. the one that didn’t has a stringer position and takes good photos.
i am not positive they are in their respective positions because of the course, the first is perhaps just more business oriented (has a nice website etc) but i suppose thats part of what they teach you.
in short it is not required (the second guy has no training in photography) but if press photography is what you want then it might be a good idea.

Thanks Sascha for this. Your right about it being held in Sheffield. It might be a good course. I’ve heard a lot of good things but would love to hear from someone that actually attended the course.
AFP is pretty major so maybe worth giving it a shot.
oh by the way, I had a look at your website. I liked it a lot especially the reportage on the bike messenger.
Again thanks a lot

thats unfortunate, i try to keep that site as a unseen as possible.
a while ago i was also considering doing the nctj course, at the time i found a couple of forum posts discussing it elsewhere on the net. in the end i decided my time/money would be better spent taking photos.

Self criticism is always the hardest to deal with. have you got those forums to hand, if not i’ii research on the net. maybe even your afp guy could give me some info.
