GalleryRecent PostHas Your Laptop/Camera Been Searched at U.S. Border/Customs?I received this e-mail from NPPA today. I am sure they would like to hear from any persons who have been subjected to this. Dear Member, The NPPA has been asked by the ACLU to become involved in a lawsuit related to the decision by the U.S. government to search laptops and cameras at airports and at the border. In order to bring a suit a prospective plaintiff must show that some personal legal interest has been invaded by the defendant. It is not enough that a person is merely interested as a member of the general public in the resolution of the dispute. If you feel that you are affected by the policy below please send an email to the NPPA attorney, Mickey Osterreicher, at lawyer@nppa.org with the answers to the following questions, along with your name, NPPA number and a phone number where you can be reached. Any information will be kept confidential unless and until he receives your permission to share it. The U.S. government takes the position that it may search through and copy the contents of electronic devices such as laptops, cell phones and cameras, as part of their searches of individuals entering or exiting the U.S., without any suspicion that the person searched has engaged in wrongdoing. The ACLU has asked the NPPA for its help in order to determine the impact of this policy on our members. If we find that it has impacted on any of you and you are willing NPPA would become a plaintiff in the case against this policy. Therefore we would appreciate responses to the following questions: -Have you ever had your laptop, cell phone or camera searched when entering or exiting the U.S. ? -Have you ever had the contents of your laptop, cell phone or camera copied when entering or exiting the U.S. ? -Have you ever had your laptop, cell phone or camera seized when entering or exiting the U.S. ? -If someone else employs you, does your employer have a policy about traveling internationally with laptops, cell phones or cameras? -Do you avoid carrying confidential business or personal information on your laptop, cell phone or camera due to the suspicionless search policy?Thank you very much for your help. Very truly yours, Mickey H. Osterreicher, Esq. Keywords |
