3.9 fps? I was hoping for 5 to 6. Video is kind of cool to have but I am not sure if I would actually use it. Nobody ever asked me to video-graph anything yet.

by Tom Van Cakenberghe | 17 Sep 2008 05:09 | Kathmandu, Nepal |
Some photogs in Australia are being asked to shoot video as a trial, at least thats what I heard earlier this year, I don’t know if it’s still happening.
Camera looks good though, although I too would’ve thought that the fps would be a little faster but it’s not a big deal.
Being able to shoot video at f1.4 with the 50mm and with real wides and teles just might finally get me interested in moving pictures…

You should see the Canon India aite, they claim the 5D as “new”…they have no clue of the MkII launch !

Lol Anamitra! It’s just great! The NEW 5D (not MkII) with astonishing 12,8Mp, yeaaaah it rocks :D

So, the MkII finally released! The less one can say, it’s that Canon managed the suspens so far! Okay, 3,9fps not so so great, but for me it’s okay, as the other features… but want to test it by myself, can’t wait ‘til it’ll be really available!
Video mode is just a good gadget as i don’t intend to video so much (okay, let’s say i’ll have fun with it!) and live view, it depends on the speed, because if you have to wait 1 or 2 seconds until it “refresh” the image…

Anyway, did somebody heard rumours about the 5D MkIII ? :D

by Heimana | 17 Sep 2008 07:09 | Brussels, Belgium |
Come back in 3 years. For the students and the poor amoung us, now its time to look on ebay for cheap 5d’s!

by Jonathan JK Morris | 17 Sep 2008 07:09 | Swansea, United Kingdom |
Agree the 3.9 fps is disappointing indeed… was hoping for at least 5fps. I’d rather have ditched some of the other features for an extra 1 or 2 fps…

by Ben Curtis | 17 Sep 2008 08:09 | Nairobi, Kenya |
yeah..finally the 5dmkII is here.. as you Jonathan, I’m now going to look for cheapie 5d’s :P

by marius sortland myklebust | 17 Sep 2008 09:09 | Wellington, New Zealand |
Yeah, I agree to with Jonathan and Marius…. I will wait for the low-priced 5D on Ebay…. the Camera works out fine for my Style of Photojournalism and also for my Studio-Work. And if I need a bigger resolution, I lend directly a Mid-Format digital Camera…. ;-)

by BenjaminHiller | 17 Sep 2008 09:09 | Eivissa Vila, Spain |
Don’t spread that idea too much Marius. You know what happens when demand rises…

by Tom Van Cakenberghe | 17 Sep 2008 09:09 | Kathmandu, Nepal |
damn…didn’t think of that. haha :P
but guess there’s enough 5d’s to get hold of anyway.they sold quite a bit.
anyway, the camera I have now captures photos as well, so guess I’m fine for a while still;)

by marius sortland myklebust | 17 Sep 2008 09:09 | Wellington, New Zealand |
Cheap(er) 5Dmk1, hmm, wait 6 months or so before there are enough mk2’s around. Will still be a good buy though.
Ben C. If the 3.9 fps really is 3.9 it won’t be so bad, but this figure is often a bit optimistic with the 2nd tier cameras (unlike the 1D series). I still want one in my christmas stocking though,…

Anybody know if there is an external mic input? (and headphones for that matter) The HD video chip is nice, but its a real shame if it just has a crappy inbuilt mic… only half the deal…

by James Chance | 17 Sep 2008 11:09 (ed. Sep 17 2008) | london, United Kingdom |
there is. think it is a 3,5mm stereo input. sony got some nice and cheap stereo mics you can plug straight into it.

by marius sortland myklebust | 17 Sep 2008 12:09 | Wellington, New Zealand |
JC,there is an external mic input for pro like sound recordings, see here:
http://www.dpreview.com/previews/canoneos5dmarkII/page3.asp

With the new features, the 5DMKII will specially appeal to guys into multimedia and spot news.
BTW even Magnum feels that multimedia & video capture are the next hot things in story telling and a must skill to learn for PRO’s,

(check the price though….)

by Subhash Sharma | 17 Sep 2008 12:09 | Mumbai, India |
Yes a mic input! That’s great! I see that there is an output too via the A/V socket. would be interested to know if you can monitor with headphones through this?

by James Chance | 17 Sep 2008 13:09 | london, United Kingdom |
Any word on the price?

by Brian C Frank | 17 Sep 2008 15:09 | Des Moines, Iowa, United States |
USD 2699.00

by Daniel O'Brien | 17 Sep 2008 15:09 | Delhi, India |
if that’s accurate, ain’t that the price the mark 1 debuted around?

I heard today from the owner of a photo shop that it’ll be about 2500€ body only. It’s only 100€ more than the MkI when it was released…

by Heimana | 17 Sep 2008 19:09 | Brussels, Belgium |
Tom, Ben, Sitt and the rest of you not happy with 3.9 fps.

Let’s see it first, but just wondering… Using the sRAW1 mode (10 megapixels) and LiveView (to avoid the mirror black-out time), wouldn’t it be possible to achieve the double frame-rate? A LiveView ‘Action Mode’ with 8 fps and 10 megapixels would be interesting!

Maybe a firmware upgrade / hack would be needed…

by Morten Svenningsen | 18 Sep 2008 09:09 | Kathmandu, Nepal |
Good ’ole Ken has lots a detail here:

http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/5d-mk-ii.htm

in his inimitable style of course. Some interestng comments about the new sensor too, oh and it has a ‘stealth’ mode in live view = quiet shooting. Yep 3.5mm stereo input jack. AND auto-focus during live-view.

How about the seals to avoid moisture when one works in humidity regions?

by Hernan Zenteno | 18 Sep 2008 23:09 | Buenos Aires, Argentina |
The uncertainty of not be able to monitor the audio scares me a little. At my paper, I have rigged our reporter’s Canon FS-10’s so they can hear the audio from an A/V port. It worked, but there is no way to turn it up or down and there is a delay. The delay makes things hard. Hopefully that will not be an issue with this camera. I just spent a lot of money trying to get shallow DOF in my videos (example: http://vimeo.com/1712264 ) and now the new 5D may make things easier. I am not selling the video camera yet, but I would like to.

weird, talking about video and a photo camera… I think I don’t like where this is going (photography-wise). What is next? Picking stills from an HD video image?
Otherwise, nice camera!

Guido,

Simply put, YES

We’re all gonna be “old school” pretty soon, I think.

by Max Pasion | 20 Sep 2008 13:09 | Acadia National Park, Maine, United States |
Time to buy a second hand Leica? or a Mamiya 6? or a 8×10 inch? Or start learning video editing?

by Guido Van Damme | 20 Sep 2008 13:09 | kilronan, Ireland |
Been surfing eBay a lot to look up used Nikon FM3a or F3. I’m certainly thinking of going old old school for my personal work. Video doesn’t appeal to me. I’m a still-image, frozen-moment guy to the bone.

by Max Pasion | 20 Sep 2008 14:09 | Acadia National Park, Maine, United States |
Me too.

haah…But ‘the times they are a changin’…..

I think I need a drink… Bartender, one Jameson, no ice…

Guess what…., for Canon India 5d is still the latest camera. Dinosaurs !

will non L lenses resolve all the way to 21mp?
like the 28/1.8 or 50/1.4 usmers.

by Edward Cheng | 24 Sep 2008 18:09 | New York, United States |
Don’t read too much in the marketing hype, resolving power varies more with focal length than L vs non-L glass. For instance the $80 cheapie 50mm f1.8 has more resolving power than the $1200 24mm f1.4L. I’d say most lenses below 50mm, L or non L, won’t make full use of the 21MP. Above 50mm, you’d have to stop it down to really see the difference. I could care less about MP, I find the 16.7MP on my 1DsII to be plenty. I’m more excited about the noise performance of the 5DII.

by Tommy Huynh | 24 Sep 2008 19:09 | San Antonio, United States |
Yep, saw pictures on dpreview and it’s really fantastic… well, considering my little 400D at least, don’t know for the 1D serie…
