New LS Group: Film Leica

Since many people appear to prefer Leica rangefinders for their film work, I set this group up as somewhere we can help each other out. In many ways the concerns of a film user are different from those of a digital user, and those of a Leica user are even more specific.

Need a good Leica technician in Bucharest? Or good film stock in Colombia? How do you fix a jammed M6 with a Swiss Army knife? Someone might know.

The group is intended for people who use their camera as a tool, not for collectors. And we want to hear about your projects.

Membership is open to anyone. Join by going to the group page, or just post here and I’ll add you manually.

How to fix an M? There is a scary sequence in Reiner Holzheimer’s film about Magnum where Larry Towell is banging his M for one reason or another (probably by taking pictures!) is jammed on the dashboard of his car. The sequence does not show if the car survived…

there could definately be a post dedicated to on the road leica repairs. I still remember the look on this guys face when I walked into a bicycle repair store in this small rural coastal town here in Japan and asked him for a file then proceeded to pull apart my M6 and file off the base of the rewind spool. So often I had problems with the rewind on the M4 – M6’s, a small bump to the spool and it wouldn’t turn causing the camera to jam.

John and Nathan, I’ve added you both to the group. P.

Count me in. (I was just joking about the 50mm being a telephoto).

Wish I was collector at times. Years ago a LIFE photographer told me having Leicas was like having a savings account.

by Paul Rigas | 20 Jul 2007 13:07 | Grass Pants, Oregon, United States |
It’s okay Paul – if I’d thought you weren’t joking I’d have made one of those little clay models, muttered certain incantations, and your camera would never wind film again!

You’re added to the group. P.

Has anyone tried posting on the group? I managed to post yesterday but now I just get the “only for members” message, even though I’m logged in. But I can reply to the post I made yesterday. Wierd. P.

Count me in too. Love my little Leicas.

by Bill Putnam | 21 Jul 2007 14:07 | Washington, DC, United States |
This sounds great Paul. Please add me in as well. John: I remember seeing that sequence of Towell banging his Leica M6 and thinking how careful I am with mine. The rangefinder can so easily get out of alignment just with normal use let alone intentionally banging it on your dashboard. This actually has been my major problem with them always. . . I’ve had to send them back for realignment many times. However, it always seems that a certain body will need adjustment more than others. Just got my xpan back after its range finder finally went out of alignment for the first time in the 6 years I have owned it.

This Film Leica thing has really taken off. We’ve got 42 members now, which makes us the largest group on LS – after “Cleared”. I had no idea there were so many like minded people out there! Clearly there are a lot of people who carry a film Leica along with their digital stuff.

Now, can anyone help my with my M7 question on the group page?

Awesome.. great idea, count me in.

yee ha!

by Joel Aron | 22 Jul 2007 09:07 | San Francisco, California, United States |
I’d like in also. Sadly my “M” sits too much as I have been sucked into the whole digital thing. I have TX in the house, a new brick of APX 100 (love it in Rodinal) and a perfectly good scanner so what is my problem. I need to shoot with the silly thing.

I’d love to see that video of Towell banging his camera. Where would i find that?

so this is what I got when I tried to join:
“Your application has been filed and will be reviewed by a group manager.”
whaaa…...?

by Pablo Delano | 23 Jul 2007 02:07 | Connecticut, United States |
Everyone who has posted on this thread is now in the group.

Pablo: The way LS works means all applications to join a group have to be approved by the group manager. That’s me. Obviously, if you just leave an appropriate sum, in cash, in a plain envelope, in the usual place, there won’t be any problems with your application.

We’re now up to 66 members! Perhaps everyone on Lightstalkers has a film Leica?! P.

I’m planning to sell my M6 TTL with 35/1.7 Ultron. Gonna put it on Ebay next week, but just in case anybody here is interested, I can be contacted via email.

thanks.

Perhaps everyone on LS has a film Leica? Shirley, you jest, good sir! I can’t even afford thinking about buying a Leica! Maybe if I mortgage my house, but otherwise, I’m screwed, dammit.

by Akaky | 17 Aug 2007 17:08 (ed. Aug 17 2007) | New York, United States |
bump

by A H Henry | 17 Aug 2007 18:08 | S E Michigan, United States |
Alright, let’s start a collection to buy Akaky a bloody Leica. He’s only got a proper job that gives him real cash money regularly, every month, and health insurance, and a pension plan. But that’s not enough. He wants a Leica!

So what do you say we each donate the proceeds of our next picture sale to the Akaky Leica Fund? We’d probably have enough to buy him an M7 and a lens in a few years…

I must go back now to the shoe-box where I live, in the middle of the road. With my Leica. PHC.

by Paul Hardy Carter | 18 Aug 2007 07:08 | Monte Pego, Spain |
Akaky if you get a Voigtlander we’ll make an exception and let you stay in the group if you throw us homeless folks a party at the house that your bank lets you stay in :)

leica M3 and M2 can go for as little as $500-700 these days. and it will last another 50 years. best investment in photography you can make. there are probably more of them still in use than any other camera from that era.

by Alan Chin | 18 Aug 2007 19:08 | New York, NY, United States |
Let’s see, if I dont pay for oil this year and I skip paying the school taxes, then I might be able to get me a Leica. I will, however, freeze my backside off whilst the school district throws me out of my house. Hmmmmmmmmm, decisions, decisons…........

by Akaky | 18 Aug 2007 22:08 | New York, United States |
Paul, why living in a shoebox in the middle of the road is not a good idea…

...but after you get splattered, can I have your Leica? ;-)

by Akaky | 19 Aug 2007 18:08 | New York, United States |
Yes, please!
