Looking for photographers for new venture database

Hi – We are looking to build a database of photographers from around the world for a new venture providing documentary photography to companies. Our intention is to provide additional income to documentary photographers to allow them to continue their valuable photographic projects. We are looking for photographers with high ethical standards and we will not support companies which act unethically. You must be used to shooting to a brief and be able to identify and capture the most positive aspects of your subject matter. You must also be able to provide detailed quotes when approached with a commission and be able to supply high quality images in digital. If you shoot film this means you must have a workflow set up to produce high quality scans. The ability to deliver to timetable is essential.

If you think you meet these requirements and are keen to find out more, please send a digital portfolio and CV/biography to photographers@nutmegimages.com . Your portfolio should include at least one positive photostory. You may include links to your website. Your CV should include the following details: your current base, publications and awards, and commercial experience.
Best regards Morag

Hi Morag,

I am photojournalist at TANJUG (national news agency) and also in “Glas javnosti” national daily newspaper. If you think I am interesting please let me know.

Best regards,
Zoran Stojkovic

Hi Morag,

What terms will apply regarding fee split? What will the length of the contract be? Is there a sample contract to review? How will your company be marketed to your target market? And how will you fairly allocate work to your database of photographers?

Thanks.

In addition to Mike’s questions, I would also like to know what “providing documentary photography to companies” means? And how “positive” is to be interpreted. I am all for stories that show “positive” human qualities, but I blanch when others inevitably come up with Oprah Winfreyesque stories of individual triumph over handicaps, be they financial, physical or psychological. I always find positive things in my stories, and I show the positive side of peoples’ struggles too, but the outcomes are not usually too positive and I mistrust easy happy endings. My second question, however, is less important than my first. I really would like to hear more about the plan.

we shoud make Lightstalkers an agency. Mine, www.stock.cl, is working fine

by Hugo Infante | 08 Aug 2006 21:08 | Santiago, Chile |
In a sense it already is Hugo. It certainly has been functioning as such for me, though in an informal way, and that is part of its intended structure, what with the virtual “office” one has in one’s profile with up to date contact info and a gallery. Congratulations on your own endeavor by the way.

Has anyone heard anything more about Morag’s idea? I got oone of those automated email reply thingies when I first posted to this thread. Looked over nutmegimages.com but only the shell is up.

by Jon Anderson | 08 Aug 2006 22:08 | a casa, Dominican Republic |
Just curious… is stock.cl supposed to be Palestinian propaganda?

Hey, there’s a picture of Jon there!!

Yeah what is up with that? hacked by “arslan”? What happened to your site Hugo?

by Jon Anderson | 09 Aug 2006 01:08 (ed. Aug 9 2006) | a casa, Dominican Republic |
Well, here ya’ go Jon.

Wow, I had no idea. So was Hugo aware of this when he posted his thread? I guess he was ruefully joking. it is all news to me. How does one manage to get control of a site like that? The article doesnt go into particulars. —Ah, correction. Just reread it more carefully. dont quite understand it, but they do explain it more or less.

So Hugo, what are you doing about it?

by Jon Anderson | 09 Aug 2006 02:08 (ed. Aug 9 2006) | a casa, Dominican Republic |
Hi All, thanks for your interest and comments. Just to clarify a couple of things – I am travelling at the momement as work came in at the last moment and will reply to the specific questions more fully on my return. Apologies for the delay – as a general overview – the company is a new venture, and while we have clients which we are photographing ourselves currently – the new venture is in response to the demand we have seen. Hence the website, and company, will be officially launched in September. For now, as an example many companies are taking corporate responsibility seriously and doing a lot of good work, we shall help them communicate this work. As documentary photographers ourselves who have previously worked for corporates in the City of London and in their subsidiaries in Africa and the Middle East, we are bridging the gap to support corporates in their efforts to promote corporate responsibility. We are ideally placed to supply photojournalistic photography to corporates who are acting ethically and are already working on projects with corporates.

For example in Scotland there is a company who is training low income families in finance management – the longterm benefits of this for the families are reducing debt / having money to partake in things mainstram society enjoys, eg going to the cinema, buying a birthday cake etc – this is a simple example, but we highlight, for the companys use the impact of this training on the community ie “what it really means”

The photography we will be producing for our clients will show the subject matter in a good light (while still being truthful) and if we/photographer feel the corporate is only paying lipservice to the project then we need to make a decision about whether or not the photographer should continue. We want photographers who have a genuine interest in social and environmental issues (hence lightstalkers) and have a background of investigating and reporting on social issues in depth. We will then be able to show our clients that their money is further helping to support valuable documentary work.

If you are interested, please provide a portfolio as requested to photographers@nutmegimages.com and we shall send you some more information on my return. Again apologies for the delay in responding, but I only had a few days notice for this work.

Best and thanks again for your interest
Morag

So basically you are providing them documentary-style promotional work for their corporate operations with a social purpose or “charitable” work outside the limits of their usual money earning activities. It is not a bad idea—I mean salgado has basically funded his own projects by doing a mix of corporate work, some directed at ameliorating workers’ conditions and some just for pure profit.

I am intrigued. I do think, however, that there may be some inbuilt limitations, and the emphasis on the “positive” could be a stumbling block, but if the clients are intelliigent, it neednt be. What I am getting at is that the documentation cannot be editorially manipulated in such a manner as to produce mere propaganda with a veneer of objectivity rendered by the photojournalistic style. But it seems you are adamant about guarding against that. There are many opportunities for this kind of thing in Latin America, if you can convince the companies of the advantages of paying for such treatment. Here on my tiny island, Haiti and DR provide many such opportunities. And Verizon, our phone company, is involved in various community efforts.

by Jon Anderson | 09 Aug 2006 13:08 | a casa, Dominican Republic |
Yep, Latin America would be a smart target for you. There’s lots of that work going on here in Venezuela that is actually doing some good. I know of one program in particular, run by a major drug company, helping with educational programs for kids in the barrios.

It does seem to have some real potential, but I would worry about the photographers being charged with judging the merit of each program. It’s a lot of responsibility to take to a shoot and could also open you up to potential client issues with particularly idealistic shooters. But I agree with Jon… it’s intriguing.

Sounds like a great project!

Thank your for the opportunity to do some good work that I hope will open the eyes and minds of poeple who are not aware of some of the real aspects of life in the 21st Century …..

I await your return from your assignments so that you can send full details…

Dear All, many thanks for your interest in this exciting project, I note all the comments and am very pleased that this is causing interest and raising questions – Jon your comments in the last post are in line with our thinking – In reply to the questions raised by Mike Fox -

Photographers will supply work on a freelance basis and there will be no restrictions on photographers working for other organisations. We shall provide a portfolio of photographs to the client, who shall select the photographer(s). When we have a potential commission for a photographer, we will approach the appropriate photographer for a quote. We will only work on ethical projects but the photographer will be at liberty to refuse to accept the commission if he/she disagrees with our ethical evaluation. The photographer will put together a competitive and binding quote for delivery of the commission. The photographer will retain copyright but give an exclusive licence to our client for use of the photographs for internal, brochure and website use. Additional fees will be due for advertising and exhibition use which will be split 50/50 with the photographer.

Marketing is currently being conducted through personal contacts - both Mark and myself are documentary photographers who have previously worked for corporates in the City of London and in their subsidiaries in Africa and the Middle East and both operated globally while based in these regions. We want to build the business in line with our capabilities - ie the number of photographers we have -

We already have some global clients and as we build the photographer data base we can take on more work. Additionally we have just won an award for this photography business idea – with this behind us and once the photographer data base is established we shall will be reviewing the marketing strategy, I guess early next year.

If you are interested in this project, please do email a digital portfolio and CV/biography to photographers@nutmegimages.com
for consideration – your portfolio should include at least one positive photostory eg the work mentioned by Art, or a charity near you that is supporting the development of individuals. You may include links to your website. Your CV should include the following details: your current base, publications and awards, and commercial experience. Once this is reviewed and if deemed appropriate for Nutmeg we shall forward the appropriate contract documentation to the individual photograpers.

I think I’ ve covered all the questions raised thus far – please do let me know if you ahve any more questions.

Best regards Morag

Morag, congratulations on your venture,I am very pleased to hear that things are going so well. As this is an interesting new concept, and you are being very innovative here, I wonder if, when the time comes you might be so good as to post a little report on your venture here and let us know the ins and outs of your “business.” This is tremendously encouraging. All the best.
