The upcoming Nikon D700 12,1 MP fullframe DSLR has informally been confirmed by a Nikon spokesperson.

Body similar to D300, fits MB-D10, full-frame CMOS sensor, 51 autofocus points, expanded ISO sensitivity of 25,600 like the D3.

And a built in iPod and PhotoShop too. That’s it, I’m switching to Nikon.

I would love to own a camera company these days. Free marketing, and people running to me with their wallets open every time a new product drops.

The Nikon D700 fullframe is official, and also a new SB900 flash.

Its all good…..I can’t wait to see what Canon has to offer next, but if the rumors are true its a full-frame 16 megapixel, expanded ISO, partially sealed, with sensor cleaning at $3,000.

why the big jump from 300 to 700? i mean,
7 is a better number but what’s going in
between?

The D700 looks like the new CANON 5D killer!!
It will have a better sealed body, larger LCD,better high ISO performance, sensor cleaning and best of all it packs the same highly admired D3 sensor in a smaller body at a lesser price, good for PJ’s!

Not to rain on your parade Subash, but Nikon is a few years late to be putting out a 5D killer. The 5D is going to be upgraded in a few months, the rumored specs are posted above……

Better late than never! At least in kindergarden.

No doubt Tim, its going to force Canon to move its line of cameras— it help all of us in the long run.

I just hope it is relatively in my price range, I think I have a kidney I can spare, let me check…

Does this mean the pictures I take with my Canon 30D are no longer any good (assuming, of course, that they were in the first place)?

;)

I agree with Andy – the competitionis good for us all in the long run….

With all these great strides being made over at the Nikon camp I’m mulling on switching but I’m invested in Canon. The one thing that I really like with Nikon cameras is that both digital and analog models have a uniform 37 millisecond shutter lag while Canon can’t do better than 55ms according to one report. Not to mention the better lenses in my opinion.

Max, any idea of the lag figures for traditional film cameras?

by Andy Levin | 01 Jul 2008 15:07 | New Orleans, United States |
Leica M6 is around 8-10 milliseconds shutter lag. However the response time between my brain and the shutter release may vary………

37 to 55 is not much compared to the M6 10 milliseconds, but there is another test for and anyone can do it.

Have a friend point a finger and raise it up at a moderate speed, from a horizontal to vertical position, pointing at their nose and moving past, like the second hand on a clock but faster. Snap off a few shots on your DSLR and see how much the difference is between where you thought the exposure was made and where the capture actually occured, as determined by the relative position of the finger and nose.

You may be surprised at the results— even taking into account your brain/reflex lag.

This test could easily be made into a benchmark and its somewhat surprising that to my knowledge no such test for DSLR or even trad cameras exists.

Peace.
