Nikon Scan / MacOs Intel
|
Hi everyone,
It looks like Nikon does not really care about mac user. I just bought a iMac 24 (awesome and calibrates pretty well), but I found out than I could not use Nikon Scan to scan with my LS8000 or LS5000 :(
Has anyone any inside information to know when this would be available ? I feel like it won’t come soon or at all…

what doesn’t work? i use my ls-5000 with leopard 10.5.2 and nikons software.
perhaps you have an old version of the nikon scan software? i have version 4.
|
Sascha, do you have an intel mac or a PPC ?
|
a new mac book
leopard dosent run on the old macs? I though it was a given I have an intel one.
|
Fabien, have you tried Vuescan as a software alternative?
|
David,
From what I’ve heard Vuescan uses the Nikon driver on the back and does not work better, but I’ve not tried as I can’t get used using it even on my windows Pc.
|
Fabien, I’m no expert but I don’t think VueScan uses any of the Nikon software at all. It appears daunting at first but ultimately gives you far more control than Nikon Scan.
I’m interested by your 24" iMac: what do you mean by “calibrates fairly well”? Do you have any problem with reflections?
|
David,
Then I’ll give a try at VueScan then.
I meant than even you can’t calibrate the color manualy with that screen (setting the RGB by hand), once eye-one match calibrated the screen, it looks good enough for photo editing. It does have reflection, but I’ll go with it (and the black are really black)

I have used vuescan as well on my mac though prefer nikon scan. I don’t need features or special curves. I just want the scan.
you have yet to say what doesn’t work?
|
I can’t get the Nikon software running on my macbook pro. I’ve downloaded/bought Vuescan a couple of days ago and it does the job OK for me. I’ve never been a fan of Nikon’s software, not to mention the commodore 64 style interface.
|
I can’t imagine why it dosent work
I would be happy to make an I Image of the install cd and put it online for you two as I can only imagine you have an older version of the software.
alternatively there may be some issue with older versions of OSx but it dosent seem logical.
|
I have been using for the past 4 years a Nikon Coolscan-V with a iBook with no probs.
Maybe your software is out of date…
|
Paulo we are speaking about intel version of the mac, of course the PPC version works…
|
I did try the latest version I could find. If you check on versiontracker.com, you’ll see that many people have issues. Also, it seems the softwares latest version is from 2004 (!!)
|
Have you checked for updates? Nikon has probably postedt Intel-updates/versions of their scanning software. That said, you don’t need to use Nikons scanning software. It all goes through TWAIN, and only thing that’s needed are the drivers. Nikon probably has that too updatet for Intel.
Sivert.

Skyler,
I tried to delete any nikon scan version I had on my intel osX leopard and installed thoses and it worked so far. I scanned few and I’m happy with the result, so thanks.
Vuescan was also working but the grain from my portra 400NC / hasselblad was much more present (too much), and with the grain removal I get very soft scan, even after I sharped it. So I’ll go Nikon Scan.
Thanks.

Nikon officially announced some time ago that NikonScan will not be supported any more for Mac.
Perhaps you may like to have a look at our SilverFast scanner software.
We have just released SilverFast 6.6 for Nikon film scanner supporting Mac Leopard and Windows.
Even Kodachrome slides may now use the iSRD function to professionally remove scratches and dust.

The SilverFast program that came with my Plustek scanner sure is sweet – and powerful.
