The International Center for Journalists, the Washington-based nonprofit organization, is seeking nominations for the 2008 Knight International Journalism Awards. The Awards recognize international journalists who demonstrate an extraordinary devotion to the craft by upholding the highest journalistic standards despite overwhelming challenges.
Last year’s winners, Burmese investigative journalist May Thingyan Hein and Egyptian citizen journalist Wael Abbas, were selected for their remarkable contributions to media independence in the face of government crackdowns and risks to their personal safety. Abbas, the first blogger to win the Knight International Journalism Award, was later named 2007 Middle East Person of the Year by CNN.
Hein and Abbas are among 24 Knight International Journalism Award recipients selected for their commitment to high-quality journalism. Award winners receive a trip to the United States and a $1,000 cash prize, which will be presented at ICFJ’s Annual Awards Dinner in November.
To submit a nomination, please visit our our Web site, www.knight.icfj.org/nominate. You will be asked to provide the nominee’s name and a brief explanation of the nominee’s qualifications. Those who nominate semi-finalists will be notified and asked to provide additional material about the nominee such as a biography, work samples and letters of recommendation for the selection committee’s review.
Deadline for nominations: Friday, April 4, 2008.
