Burma, home to 50 million people, was hit by a cyclone with 120 mph winds on Saturday. The military government, though it was aware of the approaching storm, failed to warn or evacuate citizens. As a result, homes and villages have been destroyed by falling trees, rain and whipping winds, and a 12-foot tidal wave that washed an entire village away. Over 22,000 people have been reported as dead, and a further 40,000 are missing. The death toll will likely soar as supplies of clean water disappear and relief groups are obstructed from reaching more remote populations.
NY Burma Action will meet to discuss different possible responses – from holding events to raise money for humanitarian aid to rallied to urge the military regime in Burma to allow unrestricted access to affected populations by relief teams. The first days after such a natural disaster are critical – please come out to help us find the response to maximize the number of lives saved and relief gained.
