Pakistan and ATMs
|
I haven’t been to Pakistan in years and can’t remember how I got money. Can anyone tell me how easy it is to use ATM cards from US banks (Plus network ideally).

Dennis,
I have just switched US banks myself because Romania (where I am based) is a black listed country for TD Bank North’s Visa debit cards. I asked about what other countries were on the list and Pakistan and South Africa were the other two. I now have a card with the MasterCard symbol. . . so you might want to check with your bank.

Thanks for the help guys. I called my bank and after overcoming their shock “You’re going where?!” they confirmed that my card does indeed work in Pakistan.
There is also a site I found for the Plus network that confirms existance of a number of ATMs using their system in both Islamabad and Karachi.
I still think I’ll be doing a lot of praying the first time I stick my card in an ATM, but this all helps…

I was there 2 days ago and had no problem getting money with a Mastercard, at least at the Citibank ATM. It all depends where you’ll be in Pakistan, but in big cities, you sould have no pb.

In larger cities, I’ve had no issues. If you head into the remote areas, I would stuff the wallet. Kashmir, Jelhum Valley specifically, did not have any that I saw. In the NWFP there were plenty, once in a while they would be empty but there would be another not too far. Good luck. Its a great town.
