What are you planning on shooting?

Street kids in karachi. I was wondering how people might react to a woman with a camera on the streets

They will be fine, they might think you're a Pakistani woman and try to talk to you, but i doubt anyone will give you any grief. Let me put it this way - no one's going to bother you simply because you're a woman with a camera. Men WILL stare at you INCESSANTLY, firstly because you're a woman and second because you have cameras. But they will probably fall short of approaching you. It will be intimidating and make you uncomfortable, but take solace in the fact they do the same ALL foreigners with cameras. They'll probably yell out to you to take their picture, and crowds of people will stop to watch what you're doing. When you try and get natural pix, people (in particular men) have a habit of stopping whatever they're doing and posing for the camera. It's worth having a fixer with you if you don't speak the local language, just to help out and get people relaxed. Especially if you're working with kids. There's a lot of benefits and a lot of drawbacks about shooting in this country, first - it's easy to shoot there for the most part. Cops won't bother you and people are very hospitable. The down side it that you need a lot of patience as people aren't used to being photographed so you need to take your time and let people get used to you presence. Fixers often help to smooth things over quicker. Hope this helps and best of luck.

People in Pakistan, They are very kind person but don't forget They are conservative muslim. And They are belive ."women pictures are not allowed" but you can take. how ? its so easy If they are trust to you you can take what you need it easly. Karachi.. dont forget Karachi not pakistan. Islamabad-Karachi they are not Pakistan. Islamabad looks like London. also Karachi is very intesting city. If you want to see real Pakistan and children on street, you should visit Peshawar and Kashmir. good luck.

Kerem's right, normally you can't take pix of women, but you will have an advantage because you are a woman. I have great difficulty in getting permission, but it's not impossible. You will find it much easier because you are a woman, but I would recommend a MALE fixer as when dealing with men this will make things easier. I've PM'd you the email of a Brit woman in Islamabad who works for Sky News, she might be able to help you locate a good fixer in Karachi.
