Paula Bronstein's Afghan self-immolation story

Paula Bronstein recently did a great story on Afghan woman who are chosing self-immolation as a way out of their lives. We struggled for several days on where and how to publish it.
We’ve placed it in MSNBC.com’s ‘The Week in Pictures’. You can click through the entire slideshow or go directly to slide #6 and view and listen to Paula’s story.
It’s a terribly important story that we couldn’t find a home for. We looked at her pictures this week and considered one of them for ‘The Week in Pictures’, but frankly one picture seemed way to out of context. thank you for having the bravery Robert for posting Paula’s brave and powerful essay and for posting and for paula in the face of such horror, let us hope it receives a wide reader/viewership….i hope that any proceeds go to helping these lost and suffering women…..
i need to walk away for a few hours….
those poor, fragile, broken women…..
how profoundly we have failed them, how profoundly we have failed……

Very good work, Paula. A terrifying story to view. Thank you for putting their world into context for me. What is the name of the hospital for the burn victims that is still under construction? Can people make donations? Good on you Robert for choosing to run the story and doing the voice-overlay.

Well, done guys. I only wish the story could have been on the front of every daily, mag and website around the world, but then, I’m not an editor. Again, well done both of you.

Horrific. What else is there to say, except that hopefully the subject will be dealt with in greater depth later on. I was left with a lot of questions about these women, and the idea that as horrific as their lives must have been, even their attempts to kill themselves in protest failed, leaving them in umimaginable pain.

AINA did a still piece on the subject a while back, but it is far from as powerful as this (I think you can find
a few pics on their DRR site).
A woman from AINA also did a video on this. I believe it is on the “Afghanistan unveilled” DVD if anyone as seen it.
I can check with them if it’s OK to rip and pass it along.
