audio gear for digital journalist... a new "must have" in the bag ?

hi guys,

I’ve been creating some multimedia pieces with digital pictures and audio. I have a MiniDisc for a long time, and it seems to do the job well, specially with a Sony omni-directional external mic for ambient sound. I still have problems recording voices in a way they are distinct from the background noise and with good audio levels. I can’t afford ( or even carry ) a special dedicated mic for voices ( to collect possible testimonies and so on… ). Other problem with minidiscs, is their inability to import digital audio directly as digital media to any available computer on the ground with no special software. On the other hand, sound quality is the best I’ve heard so far.

Is there any lightstalker there with some experience in doing this ? Is there any versatile formula to be a nice photographer and simultaneously a good sound technician ? I’d like to find a SMALL portable device, capable of recording ambient and directional sound. MP3 via USB export would be nice to…
