Perpignan - Visa Pour L'image 08 for beginners? Worth it?
|
I am going to Perpignan this year as a first timer. My main aim is to spend a couple of days just soaking it all up.
I am not a professional and have only had a couple of things published recently – mainly from a trip to Afghanistan last year.
My question about the festival is – is it worth heading to (I’ll travel from Scotland)…I think I know the answer to that….
The main query is as a newbie going with the intention of soaking up as much info as possible and hopefully learning a thing or two, is it worth considering going to the professional week….or should I just leave that to the folk that to you real pros? Is the pro week really for people that are already established, or have specific portfolios they are aiming to get an agency etc interested in?
Any info/advice appreciated! Cheers

Visa is definitely worth going to at your stage of development. Pro week, moreover, has things going on that you will want to attend, and they won’t be there later. So that week is when to go.
Also, pro week (tentatively Wednesday, September 3, at 7 pm) is when the get-together for Lightstalkers is to take place…a time to meet some certified heavy hitters (heh heh) and extend your network!
And Scots are always welcome wherever I am, since me ancestors emigrated across the pond…..

Thanks very much for your info (sorry my reply is late I’ve been talking to my girlfriend as it;s her 30th that week and I have to try and combine the two ;→ ).
To attend the pro week I guess I have to register on the website for 60 Euro? I guess it’s ok to do this with only a few publications to your name? Like I said my main intention is to go an soak up as much information for the (probably) 2 days max I can attend that week. Also – for the full info – I guess if I register for the pro week then I’ll have to ask my girlfriend to drink wine etc as she won’thave access unless she does it too?
Thanks for your help – I’m just trying to make sure it’s worth it for me without getting in the way of people trying to real business!
If anyone can give me an indication of what goes on that week that would be great – e.g. presentations, are most people catching up with friends and colleagues, networking etc? Are the agencies there trying to hire people or are they there cos they feel they need to be? Are loads of people trying to show them portfolios etc?
Cheers
PS : Neal – if I do end up meeting you I’ll ensure the tight Scotsman reputation is put away!
Thanks

Darren, assuming things are like in the past, your lady can visit all the exhibitions. She will need a badge, however, to get into the seminars in the Palais de Congres, and i think, into the exhibit halls as well, and for sure into the nightime slide shows (usually really cool stuff). IMHO to really share the experience with you, it would definitely be great if she were to sign up too, so she can get the credentials.
BTW, you don’t have to pay the 60 Euros until you show up and pick up credentials. And for credentials all you have to say is that you are a freelancer and you get them. No need for press pass proof.
In short, don’t be shy. Just go, dive in, introduce yourself around, tell people where you are in your development, and get a sense of what is going on in the PJ community. Especially go the seminars in the Palais de Congres, where a lot of really cool people will give out some interesting and occasionally useful stuff.

Have people had their email from Visa Pour l’Image for the pro week about where to pick up passes? Just asking as it’s my first time and I wondered if they got a bit wary of my credentials (or even worse it ended up in my junk folder!).

Confirm your reservation by writing to mail@2e-bureau.com. Don’t worry about credentials…they accept your representation.

Hello Darren, could be great if you can go to Perpignan for the pro week…i have been there like three times and think is a great experience, there is a lot of conference with the photographers exposing, real good discussions about the present and the future of photojournalism, portfolio reviews, projections, and for sure lot of wine and beers!!!, this year for the colloques there is David Griffin of NG and Gary Knight of VII between some other journalists and photographers and that is always very interesting to see…and you can get good surprises like the presentation of NOOR last year…do your best to be there…ahhh and you can take your badges at Hotel Pam´s…buena suerte…hasta pronto!!!
