I spent my teen years in New York City taking photographs. In many ways photography was my sanctuary – my own private world where I could express my personal interests. I went on to study photography at the San Francisco Art Institute and then had a professional photography business in California. My clients included Mondavi Wines and San Francisco Magazine.
Since 1980 I have been in advertising in the US and Europe and while I have worked with many great photographers, I only recently have rekindled my interest in creating serious photographs.
I am now combining my years of studying people and trends to create a social commentary series based on the lives of teenagers. I am the parent of two teens and have been very interested in the world that they create for themselves in their rooms. This is their sanctuary. My goal is to create a broad series of images across many cultures that examines the essence of a person’s early self-expression and formative years. I will eventually publish a book of these photographs.
Don’t hold your breath. This is going to take a while.
The second set was shot in Shanghai, China in April 2007. I took two friends, two bamboo poles and the sheet off my hotel bed into People’s Square. Shot with daylight and the strobe on my D-80. Kinda sketchy but successful, I think.
