PHILIP JONES GRIFFITHS: 1936 - 2008
|
1936-2008
He was, uncategoricaly, one of my heros.
a towering beacon of light, a wave of empassioned, righteous, moral music in a world drowned by its own deafness….
he sang out against the darkness until his final day…
philip jones griffith, an unmeasurable loss….
my condolences and thoughts go out to his family, daughters, friends and colleagues…

Magnum In Motion just posted a new page today on "War". PJG (obviously) is one of four photographers featured.

Magnum cannot be relied upon for direction. There are in fact two Magnums today--Real Magnum and Magnum Lite.
Real photography is a wonderfully inclusive, democratic medium, whereas "art photography" is more often a private pursuit by conmen.
Any discussion of "art" soon sinks into a quagmire of lexicological mud. To invoke Occam's razor, "art" is a form of communication that embodies form and content and the melding of both produces effective works...and by "content" I mean a message. Content alone is propaganda; form alone is wallpaper.

An absolute legend.
Vietnam Inc was one of the first photo books I ever bought, and one of the most inspirational.
I'll be pulling it out from the bookshelves again tonight.
|
I went to Philip's recent presentation at Frontline Club and came away feeling deeply moved by his photographs and sincerity.
He was one of the greats and I hope he'll be remembered both for his photography and for what he had to say.
|
Another reference both in work and integrity is lost.
Thank you, Sir.
My thoughts go to his family and friends.
Cheers,
Armando

A great photographer & a gentleman.
A fine ambassador for the profession.
It's a huge loss.
My condolences to his family.

A sad loss. Vietnam Inc was such an amazing book to describe war in all its bureaucratic absurdity. Nothing else came close in the last 40 years. Which is a real shame, as superpowers are still throwing their weight around like it was 1969. Absurdity continues.
|
He was kindly and sweet and funny in person. A giant among us.
A rare human being.

Bob-thanks for starting this thread. It was the first I'd heard of PJG's passing. I knew he was terribly ill, but you never expect it. Many thanks again.
