If the publisher is your friend, you will be able to ask him what the budget is. Then you compare his budget price to the prices you get from gettyimages.com, alamy,com and drr.net using their pricing calculators. If he’s got more to spend than the prices you come up with on those sites then great, if not then those websites give you an idea of the market value and the minimum you should charge.

Yuli, everything Wade said, plus what type of book is it?; hardcover, photobook, soft cover, etc?. Ask what the initial press run will be. That will have the biggest influence on what the fee should be, could range from $600 to $3,000.

Also, how many different countries/language’s will it be printed in?. Or do they want World Rights?. I myself use Fotoquote pricing software.
