Photo Shoots At Airports ?

Greetings !

Does anyone have an idea about what steps need to be taken in order to do a photo shoot at JFK or LaGuardia International Airports in NY? What permitis do I need, if any? Trying to set up a pretty minimal photo shoot nothing to invasive, but I don’t want Homeland Security to smash me or my camera to a thousand bits. Any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Alexander

I don’t have experience at JFK but at San Francisco International I contacted their press office for permission to shoot. They are usually pretty amenable but may need to escort you. You should get on their media distribution list while you are at it.

All NYC airports are under NY/NJ Port Authorities (http://www.panynj.gov/). However, I know at JFK each terminal is ran by private organizations. So you should 1st figure out which airport and which terminal you want to shoot….then contact the NY/NJ PA press office and take it from there. They need to be in the loop anyway even if it is at a private terminal.
They will probably allow you to shoot inside the terminal BUT not outside or near an aircarft!
I have done many “news” assignments there…..its just a little pain.

Alexander, could you report if you have any luck getting permission, access, etc.
About three years ago I talked to a woman, Connie Nardella, PR a the PANYNJ, her number was 212-435-4989, about photographing the toll area at the GW Bridge in Jersey. She said there was no way they would allow that, I only needed one image for a small magazine. I then asked her what about photographing the bridge and security. Her answer was, I would be on my own, concerning arrests. Got my shot from the riverside park, no one cared. At the same time a NY guy was arrested for shooting 4×5 at the Verrazano from the Brooklyn side, he was held for several hours.
I haven’t shot at JFK since 9/11, too many cops.
Depending on what you are trying to do, the southside of GCP at LAGuardia is pretty quiet, and there are some good vantage points to see the airport in the background and the planes are coming in low overhead, in the summer people lay on a tiny green triangle and watch the planes coming in 100 ft above them.
Just make sure it’s official otherwise, if you are on their property and the cops drive past you they will shut you down.
Good Luck

Thanks Ramin & Andreas.

I will post the results. This shoot is for some muscians and they want their album photo to be at one of these two airports. So I will try to make contact with them (PANYNJ) and see where we get from there. Nice advice on the GCP. I have driven past there millions of times and laughed at how close the planes get to the road.

thanks for the imput,

Alexander
