I agree the pay is disgustingly low. At least it pays. Better than this posting on the NPPA:
Fall/Winter Internship(UNPAID) – World Picture Network, New York, N.Y.
This New York based photo assignment agency working with the top photojournalists and publications worldwide, has an unpaid internship opportunity for the Fall/Winter. We are looking for someone who is organized and is pursuing a career in the photo industry. Candidates should possess a high level of self-motivation and a professional attitude.
This position will include working with incoming visual content, captioning/distributing images, developing promotional outreach, updating resource listings, scanning tearsheets, general administration needs, etc.
Candidates should be able to commit to a minimum of two full work days and wider availability is ideal.
Please send cover letters and resumes to:
admin@worldpicturenews.com
with the subject line – “WpN – Internship Position.”

Not comparable. The WPN intern is not expected to provide a stupid car and its expenses, likely also pro photo gear, or to generate original material for sale, resale, syndication, advertising, etc. Other than trustafarians, can’t see who else goes for that.
