photographer's rates - a contract
|
I was recently contacted by a large international NGO to apply for their phographer’s position. it would be a 2 year contract, I’d be send on assigments on a short notice. They asked me to send them a cv, letter of interst, some references and printed portfolio. that’a all fine, but they also ask candidate photographers to complete “this costing and rate form” with “Photographer’s day rate for shoot days” and “Photographer’s day rate for travel days”
there is a note below that: NOTE: This rate must include one year exclusive usage rights for all images commissioned. Following the one year period the rate shall include non-exclusive user-rights in perpetuity. This shall include cost-free use of photography for XXXX’s own web sites, publications, exhibits and presentations, as well as similar use by “Friends of XXXXX” organizations; and corporations, partner companies wanting photography used for advertising and other commercial use) during the exclusive user-rights period.
guys, help! what are the common rates in such case? what to ask for a day of shooting with the right to the images?

Hi, see official fee on :http://www.londonfreelance.org/feesguide/index.html Yours

hello fellow wideangle snapper!
maciej, checked out the ‘londonfreelance’ site listed and rates are a good guidline for you to follow. another note, might check out ‘digital railroad’ great for uploading at location and clients can pick images they want. see you have traveled so factor in your normal stuff, equipment wear, guide costs, etc, then use daily shoot rates from the list above. also don;t be afraid to discuss with the client what they are thinking along the lines of shoot rates, usually this is how i approach costing first, many times they have a budget and if you can work with that budget it makes for two happy parties.

ach (bad german) 600 dollars a day aint the worse thing in the world
|
I sent my cv, portfolio and all the stuff quite a while ago, I asked for 500$ for a day, I have not heard from the since then. I guess I was not lucky..
|
Hi Maciej, I think you have priced yourself way too low if you asked for 500$ p.d., especially for the generous licence that they are requesting. I can see that if you are gettting regular work it might be lower, but I would still have a problem with the non-exclusive rights they want forever after one year (one year exclusive is normal and reasonable after which they should expect to pay for more usage even if non exclusive), and I would never give permission for third party use – in effect, they could make more money than they pay you by licencing your work to others. Apologies if i’m telling you what you already know, but it may be of help. Good luck. Gillian
