Court cases + photog practices

I am working on a story about a man who is rebuilding his life post incarceration. He is in the middle of a court case regarding custody of his 5-year-old son. I am unclear on what my rights are and what photo practices I need to put in place given the delicacy of the situation. If anyone can provide some clarity here are some questions that have arisen during this project:

- What are my rights in NYC to shoot civic/municipal/court buildings?

- Given the court case is ongoing what are the guidelines for publicizing (photos and/or writing) the events that take place inside and outside of the courtroom with the child, foster parent and birth parents?
