When I was there a year ago I stayed in a Hotel in Sudder Street, Hotel Lindsay. Not bad and breakast included (payed 700Rs. Rates are higher, but a good talk can do a lot!!). Clean rooms, and ok, it’s not the best neigbourhoud to relax;), but location is great in the middle of the city and near metro.

hi,
if u decided to stay at sudder st. pls dont be too late to back hotel.i stayed at lindsay hotel b4,it’s ok. but sudder area little bit unsafe around midnight.some nationalists(they hate foreigners,i’ve almost hit by their motor and chain) still appeared on street.

If you aim to stay within your $10 a night budget you really have no choice but Sudder St. In fact you might not find much that’s decent even there for that price these days. Sure there are plenty of hassles and hustlers on Sudder st., but then that’s par for the course in India. LAst time I was there a couple of years ago I stayed at a very clean and well run new guest house on Sudder called Super Guest House. It’s in a courtyard and up some grungy stairs just off the street at the end furthest from Chowringhee. They also have a restaurant with the same name right on the street. Friendly and safe, but it cost me 600 rupees a night then when the exchange rate was 47 rups to the $. It’s down around 37 now I hear. There are cheaper places, but they’re usually either fully booked or really just too grungy to contemplate. And they’re the sort of places where you often end up having other problems too. I usually aim to stay within a $10 a night budget, but that’s getting harder and harder. Maybe it’s just that everyone else is getting richer.

laocao they are not nationalists, they are just local goons who seems to think that they can get dollars from foreigners.

i wouldn’t be paying anymore than 250 rupees in sudder street, there all pretty basic, my favourite has always been the modern lodge, modern it is not!!!, but i’ve had many a great evening sitting on the terrace looking at that kolkata sky, roof rooms are cool. and lots of longterm cool people, i sure wish i was there now.
all the best rich

Bit late to the thread, but you may wanna do some research on IndiaMike, a forum dedicated to traveling in India. “somnath” a longtime member compiled a useful list of places and phone numbers that might come in handy.
(And when I was there 2 years ago, I stayed in a dorm at Hotel Maria on Sutter for roughly $2/night.)
Enjoy your trip, and please share your adventures with us when you return.
