Please have a look at my portfolio

Greetings to all,

I’m in the process of finalizing a portfolio to show an agency and am looking for feedback. Your comments/critiques are appreciated.

Excluding the tearsheets, I’ll need to eliminate two images.

The second New York Cool tearsheet doesn’t work. Graphics are a little hectic for me. Also, all the white at the bottom is a bit untidy. I think the entire backround should be the same. Needs some tweaking. A very fine effort however. You are on to something with this. It just needs to be worked a little more.

Hi Paul thanks for looking. Just FYI this page isn’t what I’ll be actually showing to editors…it was automatically generated in PS. I just wanted feedback on the actual pictures.

I’m not sure what type of agency your going for, but your sports (in a traditional sense) are pretty weak. The only things that really count in the catagory of photography are your football action and your two photos of horse-racing. The candid portrait of the jockey is ok, but it’s nothing groundbreaking. The actual race shot has been done a million times, and I would almost definitely cut the football action.

It seems like you have a story in there on an immigrant… I’m guessing. It’s ok, but you should package for five images tops, a really tight edit. Keep shooting. If you want a complete edit and review, PM me, but look at my website first, ckpj.com, I don’t like giving people critiques if they’re not into the same kind of photography that I am. If you like my work and think that it’s similar to the direction you’re heading, I’d be more than happy to critique each of your photos.

You’re very generous Cameron.

Paul,
Having a small inkling for your sense of humor, I’m feel that I’m being cut down for my post. Which is probably fair. After re-reading my post, it does seem unnecessarily harsh and especially pompous at the end. For that Wayne, I apologize. My criticism wasn’t especially constructive. There were many of your shots that I enjoyed, especially your series on the circus training. As for the comment about the portfolio review, I HATE how hard it is in our industry to get a solid, photo-by-photo critique of your work. I HATE it even more how people feel they need to interject and advocate their style into everyone else’s work. I like the exercise of critiquing, but the point of my comment was actually the opposite of what it came out as. If Wayne checks out my work and finds it too literal or boring (which it has been accused of being) or just plain crappy, then I wouldn’t want to bury him with comments on his work when he is obviously after something much different than me. Wayne, sorry to dominate your post like this. Paul, I’m a huge admirer… and I’d go with the gray.

Hey Wayne! I just had an awesome goodbye/happy birthday party here at my place. About 20 people showed up, only one other one from the states. they sang me happy birthday in Portuguese at midnight. i almost cried. now i don’t feel ready to go!

I am bummed your blog got hacked because i remember seeing photos i enjoyed up there and you haven’t included them here! The images I think are strong are: 1, 6, 8, 11, and 22. In these images I feel drawn in by not only what people are doing, but how they are doing it. I would agree with Cameron that the sports images are a little weak. And you had so many strong portraits that I saw on your blog… There is just something about the cadence of this edit that feels choppy for me… This might be due to my aversion for photographs of cute children. Which of your pictures do you like best personally? It might be good to put in some of the immigrant photos from Rio to show a theme with your immigrant photos from New York. I also feel like you had stronger Quilombinho pictures, like the ones where you are lower and see the interaction between partners, those i loved.

I wish I were more help with this. My editing skills are choppy. Ever since Eddie Adams I haven’t had too much confidence with this stuff. Shoot me any questions or send me a link if you reedit. I’d love to see a wider take.

Wish me luck getting back! Flying in Brazil has been a terrifying affair of late.

Hey there Ida,

I totally know how you’re feeling. You’ll get to know the word ‘saudade’ quite well when you’ve finally left and think back to all the memorable moments, but hey you’ll be back next year won’t you?

Thanks for the feedback. I do agree too that my sports shots are weak. I threw them in to add a little more flavor, but it’ll probably end up hurting me. Revision soon. Hope you had a pleasant (and safe) flight. Tchau!
