Portable Storage

I am taking an extended trip overseas where I will shoot a large amount of work (5 months) Does anyone have experience of storing work to a portable device that can be used to rename and caption images other than (and smaller/lighter) a laptop. I have been reading about the new JOBO GigaVu Pro, but not sure about its restrictions in captioning (IPTC compatible?)

I would appreciate any help info,

Thanks.

See review of the Jobo at this link: http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-7892-8176. Don’t think you can caption though…

PDN magazine has an article about portable storage in either this issue or the last. it reviews an Epson one….not sure if it can caption though. Sorry this doesn’t help too much,

None of the portable storage devices I know of allow you to caption. That would require a keyboard, and at that point you are really talking about a laptop. The Epson and Jobo (when it is finally released) are both nice units with great screens. The promised speed of the Jobo makes that unit in particular, attractive. I have a Hyperdrive 80 gig unit which I really like. It is very minimalist – there is no review screen and no provision for file management, you can not even delete files from the unit, but it is very fast (copies a one gig card in under two minutes) with excellent battery life. And it is inexpensive compared to the other units, under $260 (US) for the 80 gig unit. The Epson and Jobo are both a lot more expensive.

I use an epson p2000 that’s the 40 giger pdn reviews the p4000 the 80 giger in there last issue. I love mine I can download about a dozen 1 gig cards with out charging, great screen, I love being able to zoom in (only jpgs). So far very relable, not the fastest thing in the world but not bad, I’ve spent many a night in a hotel editing on it but, no you can not caption.

I’m with Jack,
the Hyperdrive seems to do the job. simple, not much to go wrong, good price and very fast. I’ve used it on only two jobs, but so far so good

I bought and used a X-Drive VP 3320 (80 gigs) for a three week trip to India. I used it during the trip as a storage device instead of a computer. It worked great and I still use it often for long days in the field and as a secondary storge device around town. It copies files quickly and has a good battery life, but doesn’t have a picture viewing screen or captioning capabilities. It also records sound (with a built in mic and has a mic jack) and works as a FM radio and MP3 player. I recommend it.

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will look at the Hyperdrive…....but seems like sticking with my laptop will be the way to go.
