Advice needed: permission to film doc in Iran

Greetings Lightstalkers,

I am currently shooting a documentary that involves documenting various festivals around the world. We are hoping to include the Persian New Year in Iran this March.

I know that there are many hurdles to overcome to secure the necessary permissions to film or do any sort of journalist work in Iran, especially for an American film crew.

I am curious if anyone on here has advice or experience to share with me to help navigate me through the process.

A couple things to keep in mind:

1. The documentary is culturally focused, and will not be dealing with political issues. It is positive piece, and I hope that fact will help us in securing permission.

2. We are an American crew. I know it is very difficult for Americans to get visas for Iran. Do we have a chance at all?

Also, in addition to securing an Iranian Visa and a Press Card, are there any other specific permissions we will need?

Any help is much appreciated!

Word I get is that right now things are a tad looser for US journalists to get visas. Your project seems less threatening so I’d just go ahead and contact the information ministry to get a journalist visa. You’ll have to have a minder and otherwise comply with his/her directives. But I just saw a TV piece which allowed quite a bit of political commentary to be included, more than you would need to get a story on the Persian New Year. But you’d better get moving!

Jeremy,

I used this company some years ago – http://www.iranianvisa.com/index.htm its a bit of a messy web site, but they came through for me. They do all the leg work processing your application with the Ministry of Foreign Afairs, and then if its approved they supply you with an authorisation code which you take with your Passport to the Iranian Consulate to get your visa.

I think I paid about $50 for the service, but that was about 8 years ago.

I’ve heard that there are similar agencies in London that specialise in getting Press Visa’s for Iran and work with the likes of the BBC, Channel4 etc, but I dont recall the names of the agencies.

(I am British by the way)

Good luck!
