Afghanistan Photos Needed

Hi All, Last year I donated some photographs for a calendar that is put out by Sandy Gall’s Afghanistan Appeal- an NGO that works in Kabul and Jalalabad, making prosthetic limbs, wheel chairs and walking aids and offering physiotherapy to anyone who needs it. The calendar is printed (with good reproduction) and sold at places like the Frontline Club in London, and is used to raise funds for the organization. This year, I am trying to help out by organizing high caliber work for the calendar, as well as finding out about getting it sold at places like the Asia Society and ICP. I know the family that runs it, and have seen both offices here- the people are doing amazing work and this is a good way to support it. I am looking for images of Afghanistan (just one image per photographer), and any advice / contacts for possible outlets to sell the calendar in the States. The image would be donated for use in the calendar- the rights being only for one-time usage in the printed version, and then they show the image for the month on their website, only: http://www.sandygallsafghanistanappeal.org/ The calendar does get around (and hopefully even more this year), and is a good way to get your work seen. If you are interested, you can email me for more info, or email me an image, color or B&W- just make sure it is captioned. Also, make sure to include a mailing address in the email so they can send you a copy… No deadline as of yet, but the sooner the better…. Thanks, Scott

Hi Swen,

Thanks for your response. I am not going to be the one selecting the final pictures used, but I am going to compile the images for them. So it would be best if you could select one that you like and email it to me at:

scotteells@hotmail.com

Thanks again,
Scott

Hi Scott,

this is just an idea, but maybe it could be of interest for you.

There is an organization in afghanistan called AINA. They work to build up a free press in this country, and maybe they can help you…

Take a look at their website; www.ainaworld.com, and probably you will find someone to contact.

I know National G. photographer Reza is one of the crew…

best

Espen.

Scott,

I’d be very keen on submitting for this, but won’t be in Afghanistan until next spring, when I’m hoping to be getting up close and personal with the Kuchi Nomads.

Is your work with this calendar an ongoing thing i.e. will there be a demand for images next year?

Regards,

Lee.

Hey Lee,

Well, I cannot really say- that is, I am just doing this to help out this year, I am not sure what they will do next year. But hopefully this one will have some success and we can keep it going…

Have fun when you get out here, you are going to love it….

No pix to donate, but I do have an idea for a place that would be keen to distribute it: Labyrinth Bookstore up at Columbia University (I am sure other such bookstores, like St Mark’s would do it too.  You hit the student communities and you have a made to order clientele).  Call my friend Rob Ostrander and tell him I sent you.  His number is 212 865 1604, or email him at rob.ostrander@gmail.com.  Labyrinth is over on 112th street just off B’way.

Good luck.  A great idea.

Cool Jon,

Will do, thank you.

NO problem, i will let Rob know you will be contacting him.  It occurs to me that various LS members might be able to coordinate a whole distribution thing for you if we all get together and line up various outlets.  I am sure that everyone here knows a bookstore or some other likely place to disseminate the calendar.  When you are ready to enlist support, why not let us rally the membership in this manner?

Hi Scott

I think the Photographers gallery in London might be of interest! Do you know if there is a previous years calender i can obtain to show or something else to use as a marketing tool?

I know the frontline club.. i was involved with the Tim Page/Indochina photography workshop a while back & the frontline club had a viewing of donated images prior to the auction & the cataloge for this was distributed though the photographers gallery & many other places.

If you relay some info regarding the marketing tools i dont mind going to see them.

Regards  Mark

Guy,

What nasty email? Never got it….

Can’t, well, yes I can believe it about the shootout- wow.

I don’t know if you were checking the wires yesterday, but they found both the two Japanese tourists bodies as well as the English engineer’s in Farah… I think there was also a candidate killed in/outside of Kandahar… Sketchy.

Mark,

There should be some of the calendars floating around the Front line Club, but the previous ones images were not made by photojournalists- that’s why I got on board, I want it to be top-notch this year. But they are around to look at for repro quality, size, etc…

I will talk to the woman who actually puts these things together in a couple days and relay some of this info I am getting, and maybe have her get back to some of you guys about this- it is starting to pile up on me and I really only have the time to put together the images for them…

Thanks for your help, I appreciate it.

Hey Scott,

What sort of dimensions do they want on the pics?  E.g. dpi, height, width…  I’ve got one of an Afgan baby that might be appropriate for the calendar (see my site for a preview).

Thanks,

Laura

Hey Laura,

If you email it to me keep it probably around a meg compressed- but no need to size it down from it original size ( just send it as a jpeg)…

Everyone is emailing me asking for subject info etc- I think they (the people putting this together) are thinking “daily life” type stuff….

Thanks again,
S

Hi Scott

Thats cool….Do you have a contact or the website of the charity getting this together??

It’s a shame most of my recent work is from Palestine as i would of liked to off participated!
A little note to all out there thinking of getting on board…it’s really a great idea to offer something in return in aid of your subjects.
