Air travel to S. Africa

Any recommendations for a decent travel agent/website to get tickets from NYC to South Africa. Also, once there will need to go to Zambia – anyone know the airlines that would do so?
thanks.

I have flown JFK to South Africa on KLM, which usually offers decent prices.  There are plenty of regional airlines in SA that can get you to Zambia—but I have never used any of them.  You can also try British Airways for routes within Africa.  They fly domestic in South Africa, and I have used them.

South African Airways fly from Miami. Not sure about other cities. Compare the prices with Emirates from New York via Dubai to Johannesburg – they fly direct to both.
Watch your stuff in Jhb airport. It’ll disappear in the blink of an eye. Pack light and don’t take anything that you have to leave lying about – i.e. try to wear what you take along so it’s more difficult to get nicked. Bags are also being opened inside the baggage handling area, so use a strong lockable bag (or Pelican case), or hand-carry your valuable kit.

Check out Ethiopian Airlines, they are really good when it comes routes with in Africa. Especially if you wanna make more then one stop, for that they have special offers, but you kind of have pull that information out of them.

Hi Jessica

You should check out Air Namibia as well – they often have some great deals.

i saved a couple hundred bucks by googling “south africa cheap air fare…” etc for a whole night. eventually I unearthed a link to a travel agency in florida that was offering a british airways “special” (799 round trip before tax) that was offered nowhere else-especially not on the BA website. SA was my last adventure so I always have something to say about it. where are you going?

Tripos travel in Johannesburg can sometime get real cheap fares through Africa. Number is 011 726 5127. Ask for Monika… As for getting to South Africa, flying NYC to London and then buying ticket from London-Johannesburg can save you a few hundred dollars if you have a place to crash for free….otherwise try calling South African airways directly as they sometimes offer fares that aren’t quoted on their website or by travel agents. good luck… if you need recommendations of places to stay in Johannesburg let me know.

I’ve done this trip before.  Iberia airlines usually has a nice price on JFK to Madrid to Joburg.  Check them out.

I have flown NYC to JB on South African direct (with a gas stop on Cape Verde).  Also flown on Virgin via London.  Both offered a range of fares depending on timing and time of year.  My default source for flights is Expedia but I have also been starting to use sidestep a lot more (www.sidestep.com).  Sidestep should also help with flights to Zambia (there is an "Air Zambia").  I have also found that as several African countries were Belgian or other European colonies for a while, you can often find great deals on those European carriers.  Again, Sidestep can direct you.  Don’t forget shots and visas if required.
