The 2010 ARMA will be run at The Art Room, Rose Hill Primary School, Oxford. The Art Room is a charity which offers art as therapy to children and young people aged 5 – 16 to raise their self-esteem, self confidence and independence. Most are disengaged from mainstream education, disruptive or withdrawn and all have been identified as needing special time away from their school. Many of the students have specific learning difficulties or have had an interrupted education. Some have recently arrived in this country, some are prime carers within their family, others are â€˜looked-afterâ€™ children (children in care). The work at the Art Room enables them to express themselves by engaging in different forms of creative artwork and provides an opportunity to reengage with mainstream education.
The winning artist will required to run 10 full day workshops held weekly on a Tuesday at The Art Room, working with children aged 5 – 11. The artist will be working with three groups of children during the day who will be remain the same over the ten week period.
The residency will run on a Tuesday from May through to mid July and then require a commitment for a further three workshops to be run in conjunction with Modern Art Oxford during the summer holidays. These supplementary workshops will comprise of two half day family workshops open to children and their families plus an Open Day for the general public.
These workshops will be run as part of Modern Art Oxford’s Art in Rose Hill project. More information about Art in Rose Hill can be found at www.artinrosehill.org.uk Modern Art Oxford is the largest gallery devoted to modern and contemporary art in the South East. It is committed to helping audiences and communities participate in and engage with contemporary art.
The artist will devise his/her own working process in relation to the needs of The Art Room/Modern Art Oxford and will receive support from two trained Art Room therapists throughout the residency at The Art Room and with the support of Modern Art Oxford during the summer period.
The artist is expected to produce a finished artwork for permanent public display. This may be for Rose Hill Primary School or within the Rose Hill community. The installation can be either for an interior or exterior venue.
Please note that The Art Room is unable to provide studio accommodation and it will be the artist’s responsibility to make arrangements for such a facility if required.
