Anyone's been to Chad lately?

Hey ladies and gents,
Merry Christmas (and Hanukah, Kwanza, Diwali and every other holiday that you celebrate these days) and Happy New Year.
I’ve got the travel itch again and I’d like to start planning a trip back to Chad and Darfur.
Has anybody been to Chad lately? What’s the situation there, especially, in the east. Can one still get a travel permit to Abeche and beyond? I’m particularly interested in the border with Sudan: Adre, Tine, Bahai?
Cheers and best wishes,
Levon

hey levon
i was in chad late september. situation in the east was ok then, but now it seems very dodgy with all the chad/sudan tension. i got a travel permit to abeche through one of the aid agencies. it took a few days. i went up to tine and bahai, again with the help of an aid agency (necessary if you want to go on a wfp flight).
hope this helps.

Hey Levon,

Did you end up getting to Eastern Chad?  I’m thinking of heading over to Abeche in early March.

Xan, what aid agency did you hook up with to do the trip?  What do you mean by a wfp flight?  I was just thinking of hitching a ride on a truck to get out to Abeche, I though I might be able to find such a thing somewhere in N’Djamena.

Cheers,
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
No, I had to postpone the trip and it doesn’t look like I’m going anywhere anytime soon.
I wouldn’t suggest driving to Abeche: bandits and the road is awful and if I remember my WFP briefing correctly it takes up to six days (unless of course you want to experience an adventure like that).
It would be much easier to hook up with the UNHCR or WFP and ask them to get you on one of their regular flights to Abeche. You might need the connection with these organizations to get the travel permit to the east anyway.
Cheers,
Levon
