I always used Photo Prisma on Jaffa St, opposite Zion Square. Not a pro lab but they are cheap and do a decent job. Scanning can be a bit sketchy though. Generally a three day turn around for black and white processing, but bear in mind they close early on fridays and are closed all day saturday, so get your film in before wednesday. Also, i believe, Passover is coming up soon so labs all over the country will be closed. There’s a pro lab in Talpiyot in Jerusalem called Panorama, but i’ve heard mixed reports about them. Prisma’s email address is: info@photoprisma.co.il and their number is 02 625 1438 or 02 623 4796. One of their printers is a Lightstalkers member: Ouria Tadmor. Panda photo Lab in Tel Aviv was recommended to me before, but they’re fairly pricy and can be a bugger to find. Number is 03 561 8591. There’s another lab on Hillel St (i think) in Jerusalem, somewhere near the Artists House, that was highly recommended too. Don’t know what its called though.

I will say Panorama, but you should make sure they understand you are a pro and not a student. The telephone is 6796966, but you should check also in East Jerusalem at Garo’s lab, i know he went digital but you should check.

Panorama is very helpful, Carlos the owner will go to great lengths to make sure your deadlines are met, even on Shabath, but at a cost…most of the ‘pro’ foreign photographers rely on him…

Actually, the above comments about Panorama are probably right. The mixed reports i heard included a glowing reference from an Israeli pro and shabby reports from a student and member of staff at Haddassah Art College in Jerusalem. Why is it some labs shit all over students? When i was studying i was shafted by a lab in Cardiff that took a week to make colour prints that were so badly printed i was too embarassed to hand them in to my tutors. Thankfully that particular lab has closed now or i’d be steering all our Welsh student members away from them.

Jason, knowing Carlos quite well, I think he is a real pro and wouldn’t ‘shit all over a student’; however a student might not be able to afford the premium rate asked by Panorama for an urgent job…they might process his tri-x in their standard TMax type devellopper rather than do it by hand in ‘lost chemicals’ tanks as they have done for my films on numerous occasions…At a PREMIUM cost, I insist…These were not ‘standard’ jobs but rather rush orders to process and contact several dozen rolls before scanning a selection of images before transmitting them for a weekend magazine deadline (in my case, typically Newsweek, Time or Stern)

Hey Tanya, long time no see (since the bombing in Amman where you disapeared)
i agree on all the comments on Panorama, make sure you tell them you’re a pro, and they do a great job, but very expensive.
in Tel-Aviv there’s a place in Bazel square that is great (i can’t remember the name but there’s only one) and positive on Dizengoff that is not bad. again, tell them you’re pro. you’ll get better prices and better results.
Prizma are great people but they send their BWs to another lab, so better check the prices. ask for Yonathan, and tell him you know me. you’ll get better prices than panorama for sure.
have fun,
G.

p.s-let me know if you need anything over there, still got some good contacts.
p.p.s- looks like jason and quique are as bored as i am with all the posts we’re answering…

Yep, i’m bored alright! Bruno, didn’t mean to imply that Panorama would ‘shit on students’. That wouldn’t be fair. I’ve never used them, but i think i will next time i’m shooting film in Israel. They sound great. The thread just got me thinking back to that shabby lab in Cardiff. A week for 16×20 colour hand prints and when i picked them up the colours were all over the shop, under and over exposed and the fuckers hadn’t even put them in the neg carrier properly. They tried to blame me for this, claiming that my negs weren’t exposed properly (they bloody well were), as if that explains their inability to stick them in a carrier correctly. ANYWAY, looking forward to checking out Panorama next time i’m in Jerusalem. Oh, and Prisma know me too. Ask for Ouria, tell him he owes me a drink, and a possible sizeable discount might come your way.

Actually some months ago I had some dispute over b&w prints, because in the rush I forgot to mention Monica (Carlos’s) wife when ordering the prints. They re printed the photos in a very good quality, as they know how to do it. Price is always an issue, it’s not cheap but as far as Jerusalem, this is probably the best lab you can find. I have to say I enjoy very much Lightstalkers, so no bored at all, it’s great company when you are working at home.

Opa Quique! Si alguna vez pasás cerca de Filadelfia tirame unas líneas y compartimos unos mates, vino y algún asadito (lo del mate y el vino es seguro, lo del asado depende del tiempo y si no cuadra pasamos a pasta con tuco… :-) )

thank you all for your advice!…sorry/was without communication for a few days. Guilad—nice to hear from you. i believe the last i saw you was post psychotic female screaming incident on road, where you smiled and said “i have one of those in each country.”

will defintely take your advice on panorama…how long you in katmandu? vearing back this way anytime soon? fancy a kidnapping in yemen?

i’m still stuck in Istanbul, looks like my boss is pulling the plug on Kathmandu.
kidnapping in Yemen sound good. will you be the kidnaper? (still with that fiance?) i was in Israel for the elections, and had to send one of my crews to Sudan, so i might be in Israel again soon for a couple of weeks, since i have nobody covering the israeli side now… everything changes every day. so i don’t make plans anymore.
any chance to see you in Turkey?
G.
