Bogota

Planning a few week reportage in Bogota and Colombia. Have contacts there who will take me to visit people/situations I want. Any advice in general would be nice. Some guys are filling my head with horror stories about pick pockets. Is there anywhere real nice anyone would recommend to hang out for several days to relax? Any togs living in Bogota or elsewhere to hang out with? Advice on a cheap secure hostel/hotel or rented room.
