CALL FOR ENTRIES: Borderlands theme for a Photo/Music event in Takoma Park, Maryland

CALL FOR ENTRIES
“Shadowplay I”: BORDERLANDS – Takoma Park, Maryland

ShadowPlay is the first festival of projected photography presented by The Takoma Park Arts and Humanities Commission. Each ShadowPlay event will present a selection of photography based on a theme along with live musical performers.

BORDERLANDS: Fences, walls, barbed wire. Membranes, skin, coverings. Rules, jurisdictions, frontiers. Disputed, visible, invisible. What does it mean to live on a border, to break through a boundary, to be pushed to the edge? Who has the right to mark or enforce a border? Do good fences make good neighbors? In recognition of Takoma Park’s historic position, a border community, ShadowPlay has selected the theme Borderlands for its first festival of projected imagery. Organizers invite diverse responses to this theme in the medium of photography. Spanning the range from global to local to personal, interpretations may be documentary, conceptual, or abstract – or anything that runs along the edges.

Curated by Allison Shelley, staff photographer at the Washington Times and co-founder of Women Photojournalists of Washington, “ShadowPlay I” will accept entries from local, national, and international photographers for a two-hour screening event of photography including live music. Indie songwriter Maybarduk and Bolivian singer/guitarist Marco Ovando will perform a live score for Takoma Park’s Shadowplay event on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at the Takoma Park Community Center.

Hi Everybody, thanks for interest, here are answers to those who asked:

- Clive: sorry, we will keep the deadline there. I meet with the “curator” of the event the day after Feb, 15, we want to go on for the selection at the earliest so we can then focus and work on all other details related to the project. Hope you can make it though.

- Anirban: 20 images (72dpi) is what photographer is asked to send so it gives a good idea of a body of work. If the work is strong and will be selected, photographer will be proposed to show some more and send the high res files (to be screened). We will have this discussion later, after the selection is made, which should be made on Feb 16th.

- Dafunkdapuk: the theme is “Borderlands”

Hope it answers your questions,
Best to you, thanks for interest in the event!
