Contact List

Shinji, a dumb question here, remind, on the contact list, why do some contacts appear as faded whereas others are strongly lit?

I think people who have been kind of non-existent or unverified, or totally inactive, or maybe just zero on contact info, etc. got dimmed…it was an early measure to try to highlight/promote “good” profiles.

Shinji, had a thought. maybe it would make sense to create a “guest log in” option, so people who dont want to join LS can still enter the site. the current system requires people to register a profile just to have a look. might save you some work in the future cleaning out unused accounts if one time visitors aren’t forced to create a ghost membership. don’t know, just a thought.

that´s a good thought. I think that some people are just laying low or perhaps too busy to offer input, yet eventually will participate more. The unverified, I dont get it, either get on or off, because it is easy enuf to get verified. Perhaps we should limit the time that unverified accts are on the site, and once that time passes, if you havent verified then you get erased. Possibly some people would do this themselves but just dont think of it or havent the time to log back on and sign off the thing.

I think everyone has a different way in which they interact with on-line communities. some people dive right in and verify and participate. Others sign up (because a friend told them to), and then forget about it until one night when they’re cleaning up their inbox and then remember to verify and then suddenly discover a very cool community.

Hi guys, here I am. Jon, to answer your question — member profiles show up as “dimmed” until they make their first post (or reply). After that, you become a normally “lit” member. Like my brother said, this is just meant to be a little visual cue as to a person’s level of activity. It’s really not meant to be a judgement; just helpful info.

Teru, as it happens, I’m starting to implement a couple of things which should reduce unused/inactive profiles. First, we’re sending out friendly reminders once a week to all “unverified” accounts. We keep count of how many reminders we’ve sent, so eventually, we’ll be able to start deactivating unused accounts. It’ll be gradual, but it should clean things up considerably. A lot of these “unverified” accounts are, like you said, probably people just checking things out. The rest of them are, I think, probably accounts with bogus/incorrect email addresses (ie, they’re simply not receiving the reminders).
