Digital distribution platform
|
Is there, as far as you know, a digital distribution platform for the work of photographers / journalists? A platform where you can “host” for example your audioslideshow / photos /photoessays /articles and ask the user (a private user, NOT a publisher!!!) money for downloading it? I have found many distribution platforms for music, where musician can sell their tracks on their own, but no distribution platform for photography / multimedia stories / audioslideshows or journalistic work in general. Any advice?
Thanks a lot in advance,
best,

That would be a great idea, and photographers have been talking about this for years, but I’m not aware of any. You could develop an app for the App store through, but it’s quite expensive to create an app.

The Image file does this, http://www.theimagefile.com you can sell digital files (not just jpegs)like video audio documents etc..

Platforms like Photoshelter are probably the closest to this in widespread use. But they don’t really do what you describe, especially not for any kind of multimedia work. It’s a good idea.

Zenfolio and Smugmug have similar offerings to Photoshelter for selling photo downloads (with licenses and such).
There are a multitude of ecommerce platforms that could do what you want if you don’t mind self-hosting a website. I haven’t looked at all the ecommerce systems available but those that I have used have the option of selling downloads (rather than physical goods); that should work with any type of file.
Most large content management systems like Drupal, Wordpress and Joomla! have ecommerce/shopping cart plugins available. Magento and PrestaShop are amongst the dedicated ecommerce CMS.

Thanks for all your responses. But I think there is no platform like that. What a pity! But maybe one day somebody will invent something like that? It would be great!

maybe LS could set something like this up, wouldn’t be a bad addition for the directory to have a side platform of bodies of work by photographers / journalists. using the slideshow the site offers could be the base of it. just throwing that out there.

In an ideal world it’s a nice idea but I think the number of people who would pay for a personal use photographic download could be counted on one hand.
It’s unfortunate, but the perceived value by the public would be close to zero.

Finally! Mediastorm started to work with a pay per story scheme! I am happy about this. Hoping this is the beginning of a new & exiting development…
