Documentary Photography degree at Newport University
|
Can anyone give me any positive/negative feedback about the degree in documentary photography course in Newport University or the MA in photojournalism at London College of Communication?
I am London based so LCC would be most convenient for me logistically. Although its an MA and I don’t yet have a BA.. does anyone know the kind of past experience you have to get onto the masters degree as a mature student?
Would appreciate the help

I put together an album of video testimonials for Newport on DEVELOP Tube – you can see them in the album One Hundred Years of Photography at Newport: http://vimeo.com/developphoto/albums/page:13/sort:alphabetical/format:detail
Hope it helps.
This album is part of the DEVELOP Tube Channel which can be found at http:www. vimeo.com/channels/developphoto. DEVELOP Tube is an educational resource which features interviews, profiles, lectures & films about photojournalism, fine art photography & documentary photography.

Hey Tom, I did the MA in LCC couple of years ago. THe course was great and the people ever grater. Paul Lowe was the course director (I guess he does not need much intro). I work for the UN and two of my colleagues did the course (one graduated last year and another is currently on the course. Drop me an e-mail if you need more info…

Hi,
I graduated last year from Newport from the BA Docphot course, if you’ve got three years and don’t mind the cold and rain, sure, go to Newport. If you’d like a condensed version then try LCC’s MA. Either way, their both good courses.
I have a testimonial on the 100 years website, best of luck :)

Thanks for all of the tips guys – sorry for the late reply I only just saw your replies for some reason!
I am applying to do the photojournalism course at LCC for September although what I really want to do is documentary photography.
There is also a course at the University of Gloucester in Documentary Photography which I believe would be more relevant for me. What I’m asking is does anyone know what the BA at LCC is like? Is it more short term stories – learning how to chase single news stories or do they teach/focus on long term projects and photo essays?
I would love to go and study at Newport but it is just too far for me to commute and continue my current freelance work, which in turn would make university unviable anyway.
Hope this makes sense!

Hello Tom,
There are a number of people on this site who have completed the MA at LCC. And a few who are currently doing it…myself included. At the moment the BA photojournalism show is currently up, so if you have a chance then pop into the uni to see it and get an idea about what you are applying to. If you have questions or doubts re:the wish to pursue a more documentary approach, then the best bet would be to contact the course director and ask about the teaching syllabus / methodologies.
Good luck
Photomonitor says it ends today, but I am not sure…the uni is open till 8 or 10pm.
