I am in Kabul right now in the middle of an assignment and my Mac G4 Powerbook has died on me. Does anyone happen to know if there is someone in town that knows about macs and could help? Thanks.

Try the Gandamack Lodge – Peter Juenal’s place, on Passport road beside Indian Embassy 070 276937 or 070 282643 – someone there will know journalists/photographers in town etc, many stay there, somebody should be able to help……

thanks so much for the offer. i am down to two options. if you could bring all the original software that the g4 came with it woould be great. i either need to restart everything using original OS software etc etc or get it to an apple store. hopefully the first option will help. if you do come and could bring, literally, every disk that came withy the computer. thanks again for the offer.

Hey one thing you might want to do if you find someone else with a mac, is this. Plug your crashed mac into a working mack with a fire wire cable. (fire wire to fire wire) then press the power button and start up your crashed mac while holding the “T” key on your keyboard. If your mac is not too bunged up it should boot up as a fire wire drive and you will be able to see it on a the working mac you have plugged it in to. At least then you can access and back up your files before you wipe the drive by re installing the OS.

Also if some one is to bring you the system discs you should let them know the model and year of your mac so thay can bring the right discs.

Other wise this sort of incident is not unsolvable, and this is an awesome example of how great this light-stalkers forum is. Great idea Kuayama brothers!!

I had the same problem I have solve this by Copy clone you copy the all the stuff from your Powerbook at the Ipod 10GB Next time you are able to do restart by C toets the powerbook and select the Ipot as startup disk and copy clone the system and restart the Pwerbook and whala its running.

David, I don’t know if you can get your computer to Islamabad but there’s an Apple dealer in the Blue Area called Pac Apple Links. The owner’s name is Tahir and he can be reached at: +92 51 282 9874 or +92 51 287 4332. His email is: tahir@mac.com They’re reliable and fast. Good luck, Scott

ive tried to what you recommended with the firewire and holding down “t” etc and my computer didnt show up on the other guys. i have a copy of Tiger coming via fed ex and i was gonna try this. i was told reinstalling the OS will not wipe my drive clean. though you think that it will?

hugo- i appreciate the offer. with the tiger software on the way i should be squared away.

guilad- no need to buy anything. though if you could bring the original opersting systems discs that came with your powerbook. you may get here before my fed ex.

again, thanks to all for help and advice.

Yes your right re installing the OS dosen’t wipe your drive clean unless you want to (i think it will ask you) But backing up you things right now is very advisable.

Just so you know when rebooting your machine in T “target firewire” mode you have to hold the T down from power up right until the Firewire symbol showes up on your screen but it sounds like you machine is not booting up at all.

If Hugo brings the right disks you should be good to go.
if not guess its back to tri-x and a note pad.

good luck

This wont help your situation now but for the future. Since most of us travel with external drives you can install a bootable copy of the OS onto it(include all the OS updates as well) and in a event like this plug it in to your laptop, hit power and the hold the Option key in and a HD selector should come up on the screen, pick the ext.HD and it’ll boot from it with full access to your laptops files. It takes up about 10 gigs of space on the external but its as close to having a 2nd Powerbook with you.
Good luck..
