epson 4870 scanner not scanning?

jsut a note if your scanner starts flashing red: in the manual it says that the lamp has blown out if starts flashing but it can also mean that the lamp is stuck so before you send it in (time consuming and costly) turn the scanner off, take the top off and disconnect the wire attaching it to the base, then reconnect and and turn it on and hopfully it will start working again…..
