European picture desk contacts
|
Hi there. I’m writing this message as a member of EPUK (Editorial Photographers UK).
At the moment we’re in the process of updating our list of print media picture desk contacts: http://www.epuk.org/Resources/206/newspaper-email-addresses
At the same time we’re trying to create two further lists of picture desk contacts, one for the US geographic area and one for the European geographic area.
Do you know of similar lists for Europe? Do you know if one exists elsewhere on the web? Would you have any contacts that you’d like to offer up for inclusion in an online list should EPUK put one together?
I’ll make sure that we send an email with a link to the updated lists to everyone who send us accurate contact information that we can use.
Please use this thread just for contacts and information pertaining to picture desks contacts within Europe, there is a separate (similarly named) thread on picture desks contacts in the USA.
Any and all help is appreciated. Thanks.

I’m a bit surprised at the slight reluctance of people to get involved in this project. As previously stated, EPUK would really like to compile a list of accessible contacts and we’re sure that this kind of resource would be very helpful to a whole bunch of people.
So far we have had some updated contacts sent in for UK picture desks but we really want to get more please.
We do realise that giving up information might seem counter intuitive, but a list of contacts would be an incredibly helpful tool for all of us. Sharing is good for everyone because by helping others out we also help ourselves – a collective is always stronger than an individual.
So please contributes anything you can. Thanks.

Hiya Michael
I thought I’d come on the back of your post… not necessarily a list of picture desk contacts but a list of photo agencies (websites) if anyone is interested

Musa…
Thanks for replying and also for the link. It is useful stuff, but not quite what we’re after for the list. Essentially at the moment the list has direct emails on it for UK picture desks. We’re lookin to expand this to include European desks.
Agencies would be useful, but we’d want to list the email addresses, if they exist, rather than just the websites.

I have noticed that contact information for editors is often viewed at least in the US as a trade secret! The idea is that every photographer who can contact an editor is a potential competitor for sales of images and assignments. By restricting that number, the competition goes down.
There is also another element, and that is that some editors don’t want their contact information readily available. They already get inundated with unsolicited proposals from photographers and requests to meet. So giving up contact info is viewed by many as doing a misdeed to an editor-friend.
So this reaction to your post is not surprising, at least to me.

this request is like asking to copy names and numbers from a total strangers hard won Rolodex of professional contacts…
|
Greg, you are showing your age!
I wonder how many people under 30 have any idea what a Rolodex is.
|
I do understand the trepidation here but the aim of ths request is to help build a resource for all photographers. As I’ve stated above I am asking for this information on the basis that it’ll be listed online on the EPUK (Editorial Photographers UK) website.
Whilst a direct email for a named person is really useful and we’d welcome this if it’s on offer, we’d totally understand why people wouldn’t want to give that up.
What we were expecting to get back was the generic email addresses that people would need to se to get things into the picture desk for publications, for example, photo@telegraph.co.uk.

contacts are hard currency.
Giving them out is generous, posting them online is insane. So how would my contact at X picture desk feel about me listing him/her on multiple forums, and then obviously being inundated with requests from a wide gamut of talents? Seriously…

EPUK wasn’t expecting to get back named contacts from anyone. What I said before was that what we were expecting to get back was the generic email addresses that people would need to send things into the picture desk for publications, for example, photo@telegraph.co.uk.
