Figuring out the Nikon D200 AF systems. Help!
|
I love the Nikon D200 to a point. When I have time to shoot, it is a joy to use but when events occur and subjects are in motion, trying to figure which of the four AF screens to use becomes problematic. I will find some photos just right and others out of focus. I primarily use a 24mm-85mm 2.8 AF lens.

I really only use three of them: The “All 11 zones” for when there is a single subject that is very erratically moving, usually the “5 zones” one and only occasionally the single zone mode. You will note that there are only 3 AF area systems in the D300.

I’ve never really had a problem. I use the last setting (selector pointing down on the back panel. To be quite honest with you I’d have to check the maual to remember what the setting means in comparison to the others.
I also always have the auto focus set to ‘C’ (continuous) which rarely fails when shooting fast moving subjects. I used this method while shooting wake boarders this weekend and out of a 200 odd frames only got a couple out of focus shots.

I guess it depends a lot on what you’ll be shooting and your shooting style.
Here is a good read that helped me understand the D200’s MCAM:
