jake, from my recollections, any high-speed film like that is inordinately expensive in Europe. You can adequately push Tri-X or Hp-5 to 1600 (2 stops) with that XTol developer that you like. frankly the cheapest B+W films in Europe are the Forte and Efke films. Forte makes a fairly standard ASA 400, and Efke, among other things, makes films as slow as ASA 25 and ASA 50, cheap, high silver content, classic. Look up the Italian distributors for these films and maybe you can buy direct.

Are you on the Vatican City Pope Watch?

yeah, we’ll see what happens with the pope, at the moment the vatican is saying that’s he’s fine, well, resting, but there’s not much i trust from their press office, so we’ll see, regardless i’m off next wednesday so…yeah. as far as high speed goes, i managed to find some wholesale for about 4 euros which even with the shitty exchange comes out to equal bandh prices, however i could only buy 7 rolls because that’s all they had left…if i have to i’ll push the tri-x it gets a littel contrasty from my memory but it should work out. many thanks for the advise and see you soon,

Hey Jake,

Sorry I missed you in Rome, my trip got cut short there- traded in all my gear at Sabatini- exchange rate was great for selling, then got killed buying the new stuff, at least they had everything.

There is a place called F5- “effe cinque” in Arezzo, a bit out of your area I know but it and a place in Florence (I forget the name, but it is the biggest most obvious camera store in the city) is where I used to buy all of my film, and I don’t recall it being to much more than in the U.S.- plus they have some larger format stuff and paper/chemistry as well.

Did you look into bulk rolls in Rome?

hey good to hear from you and sorry to miss you, by the time i was back in rome from the north you had left….there’s a few places in the center that are ok off of vitt emanuale, but i found a wholesale place through my friend who has a buisness and so we managed to by some film through them (comparable to b & h), only problem was that they had little film so i’m waiting for another shipment. hope you and christe are well, when are you back in nyc??? i’ll be there in march after uganda…..
