Fixer in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Feb 1st and 2nd
|
I am scheduled to travel to Dhaka and Sirajganj (Bangladesh) this coming Saturday to document flood relief/NGO projects and photograph street scenes in Dhaka. Is anyone currently working in Dhaka and is it safe/reasonable to work there atm? It’s just me and my assistant, the client is an insurance company and they are a bit worried about sending us there. Thanks so much for your reply and suggestions! Elisabeth, photojournalist based in Switzerland

Hi Elisabeth,
Take a look at the UK Governments travel advice as a start http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/asia-oceania/bangladesh
It may help answer some questions
|
Thanks, Gary! But our trip was canceled by my client last night altogether.

I realize your trip is cancelled but in case it is rekindled. I live and work in Bangladesh. Bangladesh is safe for foreigners and Bangladeshi people love to have their pictures taken. Of course in cases of social tension (like the post fire in Ashulia) the police or the factory owners’ goons may not be ecstatic about documentation of the demonstration.
The only thing you would had to watch for are the general strikes or Hartals. They are no road transportation on such days. Right now there had been one last Sunday, a half day yesterday and another for the 18 December. They are organized by the opposition parties. Contact me by email if you need additional information.

Hi Pierre, thanks for your post and sorry for my late reply, I was away on assignment. Actually my client will re-assess the situation in 2013 to see if a trip to Dhaka is possible in Jan or Feb. Fingers crossed!

Hi Riad, thanks for your message, I will keep your details and message you if I’ll make it to Dhaka next year. What’s the situation like now? Are there still hartals going on?
|
Yes strike is going on.But it can be possible if you want to work in Dhaka with local transportation like rickshaw.
|
Dhaka shouldn’t be a major problem… its safe.. the odd orthal (strike) but thats about it. People there are very very welcoming… you may even end up going back again!
If you need anyone let me know i have contact across Bangladesh. Dhakka, Chittagong, Rangpur, Rashahi, Mymensing, Dinazpur, Kumila, Sylhet – all over really.

As mentioned earlier taking pictures and moving in Dhaka and Sirajganj will not be an issue except on hartal days. Thet are likely to resume from time to time in January.
On hartal days do not move out by car, CNG or rickshaw except in Banani, Gulshan and Baridara areas of Dhaka.
Ishtema, the second most attended Islamic meeting will take place in two waves in January, the first one around Jan 12 I believe. Traffic is heavy around the airport and Tongi.
If you are in Dhaka at the end of Jan go to see the biyearly international Chobi Mela with great photo exhibitions in different parts of Dhanmondi
Currently baking in Bretagne but will be back to Golden Bengal on Jan 8.

OK, thanks guys for all the info; this is very helpful. My client will decide w/c 7th Jan whether or not to send us.
Happy Holidays everyone!
